I first had a blackberry mint julep at the Capital Bar and Grill in downtown Little Rock and I was hooked. Of course just about any drink at that bar is awesome.
I mix all the ingredients instead of muddling the mint in a shaker and straining it over the jam, as I recall the bartender doing for a cleaner presentation. The trick is having fresh blackberry jam on hand. I like a stronger drink, but Katherine doesn’t, so to make it my way add 1 extra ounce bourbon at the end. I like Bulleitt bourbon as a mixer but Maker’s Mark is a good substitute. To make simple syrup put equal parts sugar and water in a pan and bring to a boil. When sugar has dissolved remove from heat and cool. Store in the refrigerator.
Blackberry Mint Juleps
- 2 ounces bourbon
- 1 ounce simple syrup
- 1 heaping tsp blackberry jam
- 5-7 large mint leaves
Put simple syrup, mint and jam in a short glass. With the back of a spoon, mix and mash everything together gently. Try to crush the mint leaves without breaking them. Add 1 ounce bourbon and mix. Fill glass with ice and add the second shot of bourbon. Stir and enjoy.
Looks good!
I love getting Mint Juleps at the taverns in Colonial Williamsburg. Your version looks grand!
I don’t like bourbon but the blackberries sounds like it would taste amazing! I’ll keep this drink in mind when we have friends over. The photo looks good too!
You had my attention at blackberry. Looks so great.
Fantastic! Extra strong please.
I remember ladies drinking mint juleps down south. Seeing this drink brought back memories. Now if you made a hot toddy, I’d really have more memories lol. And of course I don’t drink any of these but I love the recipes.
I can’t handle bourbon, but the blackberry and mint combo sounds tasty. You guys are so darned creative! Love it!
Ha! I’ve totally been to that place in Little Rock! I like your blackberry addition in this drink. It adds a nice twist of flavor and a pop of color.
Sounds delicious, just the words Mint Julep sound so exciting! And is it Little Rock as in “We´re Just Two Little Girls From Little Rock”? If it is, I´m even more excited!!
I think there is only one Little Rock. Now, I have to go find that song.
looks yummmy!!
Want one now!
This sounds great – you know, I don’t think I ever tried a julep before. I also never would have thought you could make a cocktail using jam! How delightful 😀
Julep is the name of many cocktails in a very funny old book I have once bought on charity sales here (Esquire’s Handbook for Hosts). The drinks recipes there are so strong, even your julep version would probably sound very light in alcohol 😉 (This is the charm of old books…).
I don’t have easy access to Bourbon. I suppose made with Scotch it is no longer a julep…
Oh My Lord!!!! That drink is awesome!!!! Love the Burbon addition!!!!!!
I’ve never heard of such a thing! My grandmother used to have huge blackberry bushes and as kids we go out and pick with her. I would give anything to have some of her blackberry crumble now! But I know she never made a blackberry mint julep. I think she would have loved it, though. (She used to make her own wine.)
I’ll be in Louisville in a few weeks enjoying some bourbon and julips. The use of jam is really interesting in this one. Another excellent use of mint.
Can’t wait to see your posts. We’re heading through Kentucky in August.
LOVE the Capitol – we ate there last time I ws in LR for my grandmother’s 90th birthday… You can do a non-alki version of this with soda water – very quenching on a hot day.
Small world! We like going there and Ashley’s in the same hotel. Great place to impress guests.
Um, yum! I’m making this!
I think I could develop a taste for bourbon after reading your recipe and looking at the inviting photo!
What a great looking drink! I like the fresh blackberry jam and I bet the flavour is unmatched.
How interesting is that to use jam! This really sounds wonderful. I’m not sure I’m a bourbon drinker, but I suppose I could be….at least I need to try this drink out to find out!
You should at least have it in your cabinet to cook with.
We were just talking about blackberry juleps last night! Great idea with the jam. Bulleitt is one of my favorite bourbons too. Have you tried Four Roses? I use it a lot as well.
No, but now it’s on my list to look for!
I wonder if I’d like mint juleps. I haven’t tried one, but I like the idea of them.
I know, really! So Southern and summery.
Very nice – I’ve been tinkering with blackberry drinks this week, and now I have another recipe to try!
Sounds awesome. I think I even have some homemade blackberry jam left.
Love it! No idea Bulleit made a bourbon. I have the Rye at home.
This looks great – and probably pretty versatile with many fruits! Oh – and Bulleitt has recently became out new favorite bourban! I think we are on our second bottle…
mint and cherries..I like the combination 🙂
Woohoo!! I got a jar of home-made blackberry jam as a gift a while back…happy hour coming up! :o)
I like your way of adding a bit more bourbon, ha! Though I’m not a huge fan of the liquor, I have a friend that would drool over this drink. Looks awesome!
I could use one of those refreshingly delicious mint juleps right now! Love the added blackberry jam for an added burst of fruity flavor. 🙂
Wild! I never would have come up with the idea of adding jam to a mixed drinks. It looks fabulous! And I’m with you on the stronger drink–I’m a bourbon fan myself (straight up, yep =). Maker’s Mark is so smooth–if only it weren’t so pricey!
Oh man…I wish I had one right now! I love anything with blueberries in it. I have never tried a drink with jam in it before…I need to make this soon! 😀
I love mint and I love blackberries as well 🙂 Your julep inspired me to create a blackberry mint recipe!
We had a limeade with mint, I know you can’t drink. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Yes, please. I’ll take a couple of those. I like everything about this recipe!
Now I want it to be Friday!
OMG! A blackberry mint julep. Two of my favorite things in one glass. You know how kentuckians are about our mint juleps. I must try this SOON!
Never heard of one of these… And i’ve studied a fair few cocktail menu’s!
Where were you guys when I tended bar? Our Kentucky Derby parties would have surely benefitted.
