(Not) In Our Kitchen

We recently visited some friends for a long weekend and as thanks for a free place to stay we cooked one day. Here are some photos of their fantastic kitchen and our meal.

I really liked the chalk board as a cheese plate. Having the names of all the wacky cheeses made everyone sound like they knew what they were talking about without trying to figure out which crumpled plastic label went with which cheese. It also kept the food chilled longer.

A good start

A good start

Our friends liquor supply exceeds ours so we had many cocktails during our stay. Katherine found a forgotten jar of ginger pear preserves in the refrigerator and used it to make a simple syrup to flavor the bubbly. (Cook equal parts preserves and water over medium heat until thick and smooth then strain to remove any chunks. Use about a tablespoon per glass and throw in just a dash of Cointreau.)

All this for a soup

For dinner we served Carrot and Red Bell Soup, Roast Veal Shoulder with crisp green beans, and Browned Nectarines for dessert. The menu was decided that day by what the farmers market in their neighborhood had to offer and the butcher had that was fresh. If we ever win the lottery that is how I would shop for dinner every day.

Another thing we really liked about their kitchen (aside from all the natural light) was the full sized chalk board on the wall. We had thought about doing the same thing during the kitchen remodel, but decided there was not enough space after all the cabinets went in.

Above is a photo of one of the best Korean restaurants ever. Bonus points if you know it.

Meanwhile back in our kitchen was one very unhappy dog. Mingus was waiting for us with an abscessed tooth.

About Rufus' Food and Spirits Guide

This blog attempts to collect some of the things I try to create with food and booze. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I fail. My hope is to entertain and maybe help people think a little harder about what they decide to eat and drink.

  1. Oh man, poor Mingus. He looks pretty mellow for that bulge in his mouth, glad he is better. I think he needed one of those cocktails you guys were having! Looks like a fun weekend.

How great to cook when visiting friends…and even better how your menu was from what you could find at the farmer’s market and butcher’s. Fun! And delicious.

I love the chalk board idea for the various cheeses and I WANT those cocktail glasses ! When my sons were home I used to chose my recipes for the week and put them in a folder after I’d made a list of all the ingredients I’d need. I’m so disorganize now that I find it hard to believe I used to do that but it worked very well. I wish I’d had a chalkboard way back when – it would’ve been fun to have the dinner’s for each night written down in that manner.

Nothing better than great friends, great food and wine…. I’m always cooking in other peoples kitchens so it is a great idea… Oh and I love that cheese board, do you know where they got it from! The restaurant is Pocha 32 in NY…. I would love to visit it one day 🙂 Thanks for Sharing! Liz x

Glad you had such fun cooking and eating with your friends. I love the chalkboard wall, but like you we just don’t have space for one. The pear preserves in the champagne also sounds excellent!

  15. Love IMK on the road! What a great idea to use the chalkboard for the cheese – it looks so good presented on there! We have a giant whiteboard in our kitchen, and it works really well, although I do know folks who just write on their fridge with erasable whiteboard markers. That Korean resto looks really interesting (I don’t know where it is, I don’t even know what a soju wrapper is) – and your poor little pooch! I hope he’s feeling better soon, that looks sore!

You guys are welcome to stay here anytime! 😉 Love Katherine’s creativity with the cocktail and the chalk board for cheese is a fantastic idea. I like that it keeps it chilled especially.

  18. I’m loving the chalk board serving plate! Do you know where I can get one? I never knew that it would keep the cheese colder for longer either – you learn something new everyday 🙂 I keep on forgetting about making a syrup to go with champagne or spirits – will keep in mind for nest party! Thank you for sharing IMK, see you next month
