Manhattan

There is a cherry down there, but how to reach it?

On Saturday, our friends Richard and Brian will tie the knot at a winery in upstate New York. We couldn’t be more thrilled for them. So this week’s cocktail is a toast to the happy couple. We wish you all the happiness marriage can bring.

The Manhattan

  • 2/3 parts rye whiskey
  • 1/3 part Italian vermouth (aka sweet vermouth)
  • dash bitters

Shake ingredients over ice, strain into martini glass. Garnish with cherry.

Note: The recipe is to Richard’s preference, I prefer Irish whiskey instead of rye.

About Rufus' Food and Spirits Guide

This blog attempts to collect some of the things I try to create with food and booze. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I fail. My hope is to entertain and maybe help people think a little harder about what they decide to eat and drink.

Hard to beat Overholt rye in a manhattan but maybe I’m just “old fashioned.”

This is the Brian who’s blog you sent me over isn’t it!
Wow, congrats to them! How exciting!
Now you know I love the place Manhattan – like, more than anywhere… but whiskey / cocktail… Unfortunately not one for me!

After a 7 hour drive to Michigan, just as I finish unloading the car, Zia will hand me a Manhattan, just as Mom used to do. What can I say? I love this post!

  4. An Manhattan is a classic. Of course I don’t know what it taste like but I’ve heard war stories lol. The photo looks amazing. I wonder if I could come up with a virgin Manhattan…

  5. Congratulations to your friends.
    🙂 Mandy

  6. Don´t think I´ve ever had a Manhattan and I dont have rye whiskey just blended or single malt scotch. I guess I could use this and call it a “Malaga”!

Congrats to your friends 🙂 You know I’m not a big booze fan but even I have to admit that manhattan looks pretty darn enticing 😀 /gulp!

  8. Congratulations to your friends!

  9. Opening my mail today was like walking into a cocktail bar – not a bad thought, but not before breakfast. Lovely pic.

Congratulations to your friends! I have never had Manhattan in my life and when I see the ingredients, I must sadly say I will probably have to wait a bit for this experience: I don’t have any if the ingredients. Such a shame I don’t know how this classic drink tastes!

Congrats to your friends. A fall wedding sounds wonderful. I was first introduced to a Manhattan during my very first tailgating in Chicago for a Bears Game. I really loved the pomp and circumstance of it – the Manhattan, not the tailgating!

  12. I love that all these classic cocktails are coming back. Thanks, Mad Men!

  13. Chef Scar says:

Great picture! Although I grew up on that fabled isle and lived practically half of my life there, I have only had a ‘Manhattan’ once or twice in my life, and that was 30+ years ago. This looks so good that I may have to have one soon…now where is that bottle of ‘Seagrams 7’ that I haven’t seen in 30 years?

  14. Kelly says:

Gorgeous photo! (and I was wondering what that lovely splash of colour was swimming at the bottom… a cherry it is). All the best to Richard & Brian.

  15. Classic cocktail and cheers to your friends!

  16. Great drink, and congrats to Richard and Brian!

Classy! Have fun exploring the wonders of upstate NY. Remember: Dinosaur Barbecue!

  18. JamieAnne says:

My grandparents always made these. I don’t think my grandmother drinks them now that my grandfather passed away.
My grandparents had over 50 years of wedded bliss. Maybe it was the Manhattans. I wish your friends a wonderful wedding and a blessed life together.

  19. Makes me want one right now. Try Rittenhouse rye and you might change your mind about rye altogether!

  20. Oh I do love Irish whiskey. Not so big on cocktails, but love a nip of Powers. But we’ve been experimenting with some artisinal ryes and they’re growing on me.

  21. Congrats to your friends! The cocktail looks superb. I’m so glas the classics are coming back – I had a fantastic Whiskey Sours last night made fresh at the bar without “mixers.”

    Zing Zing.. pick me! c

Cocktail looks yummy! Best wishes to the happy couple. Hope Hurricane Irene doesn’t upset their plans. The governor of NJ just declared a state of emergency and has started mandatory evacuations along the coast.

  24. not that i need a reason to booze up, but kudos to the happy couple!

Whiskey scares me a bit…not too sure why. BUT, there is an awesome bar in Downtown LA called 7 Grand and it’s solely whiskey, so I make an exception when I go there. The first time my friend and I went we asked the bartender to make a drink that a non-whiskey drinker would like. As I should have expected, I got some fruity tooty drink…but it was delicious so I guess I can’t complain, ha! Congrats to your friends, that’s awesome. 🙂

  26. Love the different angle & the colors 🙂

That is so nice and sweet of you! Cheers to your friends!!

  31. The only whisky drink I’m partial to is a hot whisky. I had it in Ireland when it was FREEZING, it’s hot water and whisky with sugar. BUT it comes with a shortbread biscuit. I had about five. I do wonder if the addition of a cherry would of made it more fun too!

What is your vermouth of choice?
