The first of many problems to come

This is too deep a hole to plant arugula seeds by the way

Two days after planting my arugula seeds one of the dogs decided they were in the perfect place for a nap and proceeded to dig a nice big hole to sleep in. So now I get to replant the arugula and build a higher, jump-proof fence. Hopefully I will not have arugula plants sprouting up in the rest of the garden this year but time will tell. I had planned to plant the tomatoes and peppers over the weekend, but I may wait an extra week to see if anything sprouts where it shouldn’t.

Don't let him fool you, he is not sorry he did it and plans to do it again

About Rufus' Food and Spirits Guide

This blog attempts to collect some of the things I try to create with food and booze. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I fail. My hope is to entertain and maybe help people think a little harder about what they decide to eat and drink.

The caption on that bottom picture is PERFECT! Nothing lies like a dog! πŸ˜‰

  2. Very cute, if bad, dog. I feel your pain..I planted seeds today in my raised bed garden, and now the cats think it’s a new place to scratch and play in the dirt. I guess I should be glad they don’t use it as a litter box!

  3. BrainRants says:

Good luck with the pet thing… or not.

  4. Jessica says:

haha! I am amused that your dog digs dirt beds for himself. I mean…bad dog!

  5. rutheh says:

Oh no is he in the doghouse now?

  6. Hilarious! What’s your dog’s name?? I’m think if he dug vigorously, there should be seeds all over the place:)

  7. Tandy says:

That is too sweet of your dog to help you garden πŸ™‚

  8. Carolyn Chan says:

How lucky you are to have a canine helper in the garden !

  9. I’m sure he was just helping distribute the seeds a liitle further πŸ™‚

  10. HA! Boy, do I feel your pain… Chloe-Dog used to do the same thing.
    I still miss her, though.

  11. Maureen says:

LOL everyone needs a helper in the garden! My dog likes to bury his bones and will do it in the worst place every time. I wouldn’t do without him though!

  12. A_Boleyn says:

What a sweet canine fibber. He really DOES look like he’s saying he’s sorry, doesn’t he? πŸ™‚ But you know better. Good luck on your next batch of seeds.

  13. We have what I call “devil” squirrels here. They are into everything, dig up any kind of bulb, and move it. Saw a rabbit in my backyard one day last week. Have never seen one there before. Varmits are taking over here. lol.

  14. ChgoJohn says:

How I sympathize. I now have to crate Max when I plant the flower boxes or he’ll go after the plants, be they freshly planted or in the nursery trays waiting. Good luck with the replanting and fence building!

  15. Amy says:

haha, awww…but look at that cute face! How could you stay mad πŸ˜‰

  16. I have an open flower garden in our yard (the veggie garden is fenced) and with an entire yard for the dog to roam in, he chooses to mangle my flower beds. And I agree, he is not as sorry as he pretends to be when caught.

  17. Mad Dog says:

“Don’t let him fool you, he is not sorry he did it and plans to do it again” – I can see it written all over his face πŸ˜‰

  18. niasunset says:

Good luck for new plants dear Rufus, the photograph and the words are amazing. You are so nice. Thank you, with my love, nia

  19. spree says:

I can’t seem to shake the image of your dog sprouting arugula, like a living, moving (digging) chia pet. πŸ™‚

  20. I can’t wait for future updates on this! I bet Mingus is anxiously awaiting to see where he can find a soft spot again!

  21. Oh well I don’t think you can ever have too much rocket/argula πŸ™‚

  22. Cute post! YOur dog sounds like my mischievous 2 year old! Good luck this year with planting!

  23. I finally figured out a way around the comment problem
I loved the caption under the last picture..:)

  24. Aw! He certainly “looks” sorry! So cute!

  25. egg me on says:

Ohhhh poor doggie! Uh, I mean arugula. Maybe he was jonesin’ for some leafy greens. Sorry, man.

  26. Rachel says:

Haha. Mingus can’t be blamed. If he saw Dad digging around he must have thought you were picking out a spot for him.

  27. delicio8 says:

He was helping! You will find arugula growing in strange places I bet. One of my dogs always has to “help” usually help mess things up!

  28. I wish I had a garden to grow arugula!

  29. This post is making me laugh…My dog Ella loves to get inside my little urban garden with me…she quietly sneaks in when I leave the gate open….yes I had to put up a fence! She tries to hid her toys and bones under certain green leafy vegetables when she has the chance. I’m trying to cut down on her chances…! Great post.

  30. Christine Faris says:

My English Bulldog puppy loves to mess about in newly turned soil. My herbs don’t appreciate it.

  31. Oh, poor arugula! But you must persevere (The dog will).

  32. Pets, they always seem to want to sleep exactly where you don’t want them to! Freshly sown seeds, freshly washed laundry… πŸ˜‰

  33. I can’t believe you planted your seeds where your dog wanted to nap…sheesh! πŸ˜‰

  34. GroundCherry says:

Such a classy weed to grow, though! Make a nicer salad than dandelion greens and chickweed, I’d bet.

  35. Our dogs dug a tunnel to China today after the rain stopped. Brilliant mutts!

  36. Courtney says:

Those dastardly dogs! I’m very thankful our pup leaves the garden alone – as far as I know.

  37. Kristy says:

LOL! Love that last picture. And he’s probably planning where to do it next. πŸ˜‰ Too cute.

  38. He IS sorry. I can tell. I am a dog psychic. Ask Sadie. Is he part Husky or Akita? Super cute dog. πŸ™‚

  39. Purely.. Kay says:

Aww. I’m sure they didn’t mean it :). They probably just smelled your scent in the area and wanted to be close to ya πŸ™‚

  40. I hope you don’t turn the soil over yourself… you’ve got a good helper there, I must say!

  41. nice! thankfully it’s been warm enough here to start working in the gardens. my crocuses are even coming up! i do expect one last winter storm with 5 inches of snow sometime in the next week or so

  42. ....RaeDi says:

Love the picture of your dog, won’t look at you… he is guilty! I had a cat once that dug up everything I planted. Then a few months later decided to make a nice bed in the middle of my garden, mashing everything into a nice pile! But we love our animals and need higher fences! This same cat, a Maine Coon, loved to swim and would take a swim in my koi pond every day… the first time I thought he was going fishing, just swimming and then sunning himself!
