This weekend I pulled the last of the jalapenos, green peppers, basil and gasp … green tomatoes. Yes, we had tomatoes grow all the way through the end of October. It has been a weird year.
The turnips are doing great, and next year I intend to plant two batches instead of one. The greens are producing more than enough to eat as I thin the plants for the roots to take hold over winter. All things look towards a heavy turnip harvest in the spring.
I prepped the soil and pruned the garlic, carrots and in another week will cut back all the spices for the winter. I also hacked back the last of the mint for the season and made another batch of creme de menthe. I am planning for a rough winter to follow this very wet and mild summer and will be mulching the winter plants with a mix of ground leaves and compost. I may have to also cover the ground with plastic, only time will tell.

Greg, do your jalapeño peppers turn red if allowed to sit on the vine (to ripen?), or do they always remain green? >
It takes a really long time but they do turn red. Since it’s getting colder these won’t. Some started to turn purple.
Mine have turned red now, and lost half their heat. Ive harvested some green and some red this year.
It sounds like you had a successful garden this year…that is great. This has been such a strange year in my garden. I have a pepper plant that has blossoms on it even though it has gone through several frosts and we may get snow later this week. 😀
I’ve still got red tomatoes growing and growing here in Indy, and at almost Halloween. It’s a long, warm start to Fall here! I think next year I’ll plant about half as many tomatoes!
Half as many? You should double your crop!:) Send extras my way for safekeeping.
You surely do have a green thumb! Not entirely sure how you can stomach Creme de Menthe though!
I’m jealous of all of those jalapenos!!!! I wish I had somewhere to grow them.
Thanks. I’m having no luck commenting on your blog lately BTW. I’ve been drooling over the posts as normal though.
You certainly had a great year in the garden, Greg. Mine was anything but. Lucky I’ve farmers markets nearby.
Last summer was definitely wet but please don’t mention a bad winter. Last year was bad enough I need a break lol.
