Kicking off Tomato Week

I can eat a fresh tomato like an apple

We’ve had such a great tomato crop this year that we’re throwing a bit of a party over here at the Rufus Guide. Miss Chica, you bring the olives; Chicago John, you bring the cheese and Roger, wine please?

What will we bring to the table, aside from our sparkling personalities? Well, all this week we’ll be featuring tomato recipes and highlighting ones from our archives and other bloggers. We’ll have soups and salads, drinks and sides. And we hope you all leave hungry!

We’ll start a new round of tomato recipes tomorrow, but first a look at some of our favorites.

Tomato Pie

    I’m jealous of all the fresh tomatoes (my favorite food!) we have quite a while yet before ours are ripe… Well, I think one of my sungolds is almost ready, but it could be more than a month before the large ones are.

    If I had access to fresh tomatoes from my garden I would be loathe to do anything other than eat tons of fresh tomato salads to enjoy their flavour. My mother in-law has an allotment in the UK and they grow tomatoes and she always has so many she can’t finish it all and makes tomato relishes and jams which are delicious with cheese and meats.

  7. I’m very envious. Our tomato season is starting very late owing to the wet and cool weather. So many good dishes that it’s impossible to choose.

    You should live in Valencia – they have a tomato festival too, where the whole city throws tomatoes at each other in a dedicated festival, the Tomatina πŸ˜‰

  11. Great round up! Tomatoes are my favourites! I used to eat them like apples at school, no more soggy sandwiches. And yes, Dad still makes a tomato and garlic salad. Pungent and delicious!

  13. Mmmmmm…my favorite time of the year! I won’t have any ripe ones this week from my own garden, but they’re starting to show up at the farmer’s market in the stalls of the inland farmers!

  32. It looks as if I came just in time… Tomatoes…. Heavenly. I am a bit envious guys. My tomatoes and peppers, although they look lovely arevery slow to grow. Maybe I will be celebrating next season. Your dishes look amazing.

  33. It never ceases to amaze me how far ahead you guys are in the season! We’re still in the middle of berry season here, and tomatoes are so far off that I can barely imagine them yet. But even to non-tomato lover (I want to love them, I really do!!) these dishes look fantastic. Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with this week!
