Breezy drinks

Imagine a tropical background

If a psycho killer in an airport bar guesses you drink this, do not get on his plane. Don’t order a Bay Breeze thinking the substitution of pineapple juice for grapefruit juice will save you. It won’t.

Sea Breeze

  • 1- 1 1/2 parts vodka (see instructions)
  • 1 1/2 parts cranberry juice
  • 1 1/2 parts grapefruit juice
  • juice from half a lime
  • soda water (optional)

Combine all ingredients, except soda water in a Collins glass with ice. Stir. Add soda water to taste, if desired. If doing that use 1 1/2 parts vodka.

About Rufus' Food and Spirits Guide

This blog attempts to collect some of the things I try to create with food and booze. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I fail. My hope is to entertain and maybe help people think a little harder about what they decide to eat and drink.

Sometimes psycho killers can be thrown off if you order a Sea Breeze in a hurricane glass instead of a Collins glass . . . but not always.

It’s a bit of a crap shoot! Or as Dennis Finch used to say, Just Shoot Me!

  2. I’ll take one of those…OK you’ve talked me into it…two of those. Unless I’m at the airport. Got it.

  3. This brings back memories… I used to bartend and there was a guy that would come in and always order these. I made them super-strong and he would drink 5 or 6 before driving home.

  4. So pretty. Goes with all of those strawberries you have been eating.

A refreshing drink in an inviting glass. I have never had one but I can tell you our weather is summery enough to start mixing them up now!
Loved all the film references to the drink.

  6. Carolyn Chan says:

Gosh that looks so refreshing ! It’s past midday here – can I drink one now ?

  7. Purely.. Kay says:

I LOVE this .. but of course without the vodka lol. I’m going to try this without it.. what do you think?

  8. Delicious!
    🙂 Mandy

I’ve not had one of these since I tended bar. I remember the party; I just don’t remember much else. I think it’s safe to say that I enjoy these.

  10. Tandy says:

This is my type of drink!

  11. BrainRants says:

This sounds healthy enough to be good for you. Bet they’re refreshing on a hot day.

  12. Kristy says:

Perhaps this will be my Friday evening drink! We were driving through Kentucky yesterday – saw the Bourbon Train signs and thought of you guys! 🙂

  13. aFrankAngle says:

A good drink for these unusually balmy days in March!

  14. Awesome. “No, thank you, Mr. Psycho Killer. I will not allow you to guess my drink. Nor will I tell you what plane I’m catching.” Great drink!

  15. JamieAnne says:

Great drink post! That. Movie. Was. Awesome.

You’re right of course, if someone guesses your drink….never order something else…just run.

  16. It is warm and breezy here in Nashville…it must be time for this wonderful breezy drink of yours…sans psycho killers of course! Salut.

  17. zestybeandog says:

I like this combo! Sounds refreshing!

  18. Mmm feels like I am on the beach (in my dreams).

  19. Andrea says:

Looks great! What time are you pouring! I will remember not to try and deflect with a Bay Breeze! Another thing on my anti-pscho airport checklist!

  20. niasunset says:

I wanted to drink… Beautiful photograph and should be worthy to taste it… Thank you dear Rufus, have a nice day, with my love, nia

Hummmm… I’ve got the feeling there’s some double meaning in the psycho killer, but I am clueless. Maybe one needs to be a “real American” to “get it”?

I gotta ask my beloved husband for clarification

in the meantime, loved the glass, the drink would probably make me pass out (not before being really silly and make a fool of myself… 😉

  22. This cocktail looks fantastic. But, mix a good vodka with just about anything and it is pretty tasty.

  23. It’s 25°C and really sunny and this drink recipe could not have come at a better time…perfect patio weather. Cheers.

  24. egg me on says:

    Ohhh boy. Am I glad it’s 79º today. This is the perfect patio/roof deck/front porch/back stoop/sitting-on-the-sidewalk-while-your-neighbors-give-you-questionable-looks drink.

  25. Sissi says:

Two sour ingredients! It sounds like a cocktail I would enjoy a lot.
I love your way of thinking “if you add water, add more alcohol”. I have exactly the same philosophy!

  26. Mad Dog says:

I shared a flat with a complete madman once – this was his favourite drink – no kidding!

  27. TasteFood says:

    Bring on the breeze.

  28. That looks soooooo good!!!!

  29. Rock Salt says:

    So… thirsty… ….

  30. It’s 2pm and I’m ready to drink/inhale about 1/2 a dozen of these.

  31. Jessica says:

This sounds like it wouldn’t be too sweet even though it’s a pretty drink!

  32. Oh thank goodness you made reference to Sally about what movie you were talking about, I had no idea and it was killing me!

  33. So refreshing. One of my fav alternatives to my stand by vodka-cranberry drinks.

  34. k.m. says:

Haha, I never knew that reference. One of my teachers in high school had the last name Seabreeze. She was really nice though. Or at least we all survived the year 🙂

Anyway, this sounds really good. Perfect for this unseasonal warm weather!

  35. ....RaeDi says:

Beautiful photo, I love cranberry juice!

  36. I love cranberry juice, too. This has to be good. Wish my father-in-law was still alive, he would love this. He drank just vodka and cranberry juice for years.

  37. I love any drink with Vodka. Great color.
