This weekend is a big sports day in the states and I feel a little lazy. The photos are from Katherine’s smart phone during my birthday meal at Ashley’s. I would not let her turn on the flash since: A) it was my birthday and I really wanted to relax and B) Ashley’s is pretty fancy and most people don’t like to have a flash firing off around them. So the photos are grainy, with funny color casts, but for a camera phone inside a candle-lit romantic restaurant, they look pretty good. Above are oysters on a bed of sea salt.
This frothy drink made Katherine a convert to the idea of egg whites in a cocktail. It also had honey, lavender and various fancy boozes.
That is a pile of homemade pork rinds with plum jelly and pork terrine. So fancy and yet so simple, which is something Ashley’s excels at. There are a ton of Southern ingredients on the menu from sorghum to black-eyed peas, all cooked in inventive ways. Staying true to my birthday tradition of steak and potatoes I had Kobe beef and Katherine had the fillet. (Not all the pictures turned out.)
This dessert was three different chocolate mouses with frozen milk.
Here’s our friend Flat Ruthie from the fun blog by Ruth Hendricks called Cardboard Me Travels. Katherine’s taken her all over Little Rock and when the waitress spied her, she said Ruthie definitely needed to be photographed at the best restaurant in town. We figured after doing this to her, she deserved a nice night out.
I am ridiculously intrigued by this Where’s Ruthie thing. How neat! And dude, that dessert looks spectacular. That is definitely some food art. What a wonderful dinner you had, Happy Birthday!!!
Further validation of my dream to one day live in a hotel. Permanent guests eat out every night of the week. Sigh.
Lovely meal. The chocolate plate looked delicious … shame about the lighting. I’ve only taken pictures in ONE restaurant so far and, luckily, had no problems with the staff but it’s a pretty casual place. 🙂
PS: For some reason I thought you were referring to a birthday celebration some time ago. If it was recent/today, Happy Birthday or at least a belated Happy Birthday. 🙂
Happy Birthday, Greg! Sounds like a perfect celebration for a great day!
Hope your whole weekend will be equally awesome!
Nice mood with the color cast and low light. Katherine did great.
I am a fan of available light as you know
and Happy Birthday to you Greg. Flat Ruthie gets to spend birthdays with you AND Chicago John? Lucky girl to celebrate birthday dinners with two of the best food bloggers I know. Flat Ruthie didn’t mind being a hood ornament I am sure. At least I didn’t hear any complaints.
Looks like a lot of good eating and drinking going on with lovely atmosphere.
Wow, what a fun photo at the end and a pingback to boot! Party crasher is right.
If I was Flat Ruthie I would have fallen face first into that dessert plate… there are worse ways to go.
Happy Birthday Gregg, I love the dinner that you had specially that mousse and oysters.
I would like to eat at Ashley’s. Happy Birthday!
Belated birthday greetings…all the best people were born around this time of year! It looks like it was a wonderful meal and I don´t think 3 was a crowd was it?!
Happy birthday and forget the colour cast – probably not too cool a thing to say in Little Rock! Delicious menu and I was truly tempted by the pork rinds, which is unusual for me.
Ha, that took me a minute. Yes, pork rinds aren’t exactly a part of our normal diet. This chef’s pretty genius.
Happy birthday ! What a gorgeously decadent looking way to celebrate. Everything looks soooo delicious.
I would love to plan a birthday at Ashley’s. It could only be better if both of you AND Flat Ruthie could attend. That food looks SO good!
What a lovely dinner, and what an honour that Flat Ruthie joined you! Happy SBS!
Was that rice under the clams?
Sea salt under oysters. Very good!
Oh! Nice! Thanks!
I *LOVE* that Ruthie made an appearance at your swank dinner. Super fun. 🙂
Happy belated birthday, Greg! Now *that* was a birthday dinner! Could it be mere coincidence that Flat Ruthie found herself at not one but TWO birthday parties? Methinks she may be working the system. The Party Girl gets around! Cent’ anni!
Looks like a great birthday meal!
Everyone needs a lazy Sunday, every now and then…enjoy!
I’m also having a very lazy Sunday. The meal must have been delicious. I love especially the multiple pork course 🙂 Flat Ruthie sounds intriguing. I must learn more about her.
That looks like a fabulous birthday meal at Ashley’s and what a fabulous dessert. Lucky Ruthie! Happy Belated Birthday and many happy returns!
Happy belated birthday. Cheers!
Happy Birthday … and the food looks great.
What a lovely birthday dinner! My eyes instantly caught that dessert tho…wow, how cool is that!! Any chance you could try to recreate it ??
Mousse and frozen milk et. al. I think I’d have an easier time recreating the pork terrine or plum and mustard jam.
Happy belated birthday! The last time I was in Arkansas for my birthday (several years ago), I went to the Flying Fish!
We haven’t been there in ages! Thanks for the reminder. The catfish place near our house, called Grandpa’s, closed. There’s still two other locations, but still.
Happy Birthday Greg! A toast to you with that yummy looking white drink. Maybe you can try to recreate that is Rufus Food and Spirits Kitchen?
Happy Birthday Greg. What a way to start your year with such a decadent meal!
🙂 Mandy
It looks and sounds like you had a wonderful birthday. I don’t want to rush you getting older but I am already looking forward to your next big day.
What a great post, Greg! And the photographs were beautiful. Happy belated birthday to you!

How nice. I want to drink that white cocktail. And Flat Ruthie’s just swell!
Happy belated birthday Greg 🙂 That meal looks delectable – and oh I wish I could join Flat Ruthie on her travels!
You should go to her blog and request she come visit you! She’s going all over the world.
Happy late Birthday! All the food looks great and the restaurant looks so nice. I have the hardest time with pictures for my site. Getting the lighting right is really hard for me. Boy, that chocolate looks good!
A belated Happy Birthday Greg! It’s nice to see you got to go out, even though I know you both love to cook! Love that you took your friend with you! haha
I’m definitely ages late on this one!! I don’t know how I missed it! Looks like you had a fabulous birthday, amazing food (I wouldn’t expect less).. Happy Birthday!!
