Yet Another Lazy Sunday

The color cast in these photos is due to very low lighting

This weekend is a big sports day in the states and I feel a little lazy. The photos are from Katherine’s smart phone during my birthday meal at Ashley’s. I would not let her turn on the flash since: A) it was my birthday and I really wanted to relax and B) Ashley’s is pretty fancy and most people don’t like to have a flash firing off around them. So the photos are grainy, with funny color casts, but for a camera phone inside a candle-lit romantic restaurant, they look pretty good. Above are oysters on a bed of sea salt.

The drink was white

This frothy drink made Katherine a convert to the idea of egg whites in a cocktail. It also had honey, lavender and various fancy boozes.

Homemade pork rinds are really good

That is a pile of homemade pork rinds with plum jelly and pork terrine. So fancy and yet so simple, which is something Ashley’s excels at. There are a ton of Southern ingredients on the menu from sorghum to black-eyed peas, all cooked in inventive ways. Staying true to my birthday tradition of steak and potatoes I had Kobe beef and Katherine had the fillet. (Not all the pictures turned out.)

Imagine the chocolate is a chocolate color

This dessert was three different chocolate mouses with frozen milk.

Looks like someone crashed my party

Here’s our friend Flat Ruthie from the fun blog by Ruth Hendricks called Cardboard Me Travels. Katherine’s taken her all over Little Rock and when the waitress spied her, she said Ruthie definitely needed to be photographed at the best restaurant in town. We figured after doing this to her, she deserved a nice night out.

About Rufus' Food and Spirits Guide

This blog attempts to collect some of the things I try to create with food and booze. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I fail. My hope is to entertain and maybe help people think a little harder about what they decide to eat and drink.

I am ridiculously intrigued by this Where’s Ruthie thing. How neat! And dude, that dessert looks spectacular. That is definitely some food art. What a wonderful dinner you had, Happy Birthday!!!

  2. Further validation of my dream to one day live in a hotel. Permanent guests eat out every night of the week. Sigh.

Lovely meal. The chocolate plate looked delicious … shame about the lighting. I’ve only taken pictures in ONE restaurant so far and, luckily, had no problems with the staff but it’s a pretty casual place. 🙂

PS: For some reason I thought you were referring to a birthday celebration some time ago. If it was recent/today, Happy Birthday or at least a belated Happy Birthday. 🙂

Nice mood with the color cast and low light. Katherine did great.
I am a fan of available light as you know
and Happy Birthday to you Greg. Flat Ruthie gets to spend birthdays with you AND Chicago John? Lucky girl to celebrate birthday dinners with two of the best food bloggers I know. Flat Ruthie didn’t mind being a hood ornament I am sure. At least I didn’t hear any complaints.
Looks like a lot of good eating and drinking going on with lovely atmosphere.
Wow, what a fun photo at the end and a pingback to boot! Party crasher is right.

  6. If I was Flat Ruthie I would have fallen face first into that dessert plate… there are worse ways to go.
