Look ma no cans jam

Or just eat it with a spoon from the jar

Our regular readers will be shocked and amazed to see this jam contains figs. Those with a fear of canning can stop sweating. This is a quick jam.

Chunky plum and fig jam

  • 3 pounds dark-skinned plums (about 12 large) quartered, pitted
  • 1 cup figs, quartered
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 3/4 tsp ground allspice

Dump fruit, sugar, spice and lemon juice in a heavy three-quart saucepan. Put a lid over it and cook on low, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the mix gets juicy, about 15 minutes. Take the lid off and turn the heat up to medium, stirring occasionally. Cook until plums fall apart and mix is thick, about 25 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and refrigerate. Serve with bread or alongside pork.

I’ve never had Plum/Fig jam. Looks tasty! 😀

  2. Kristy says:

YES! No canning! Have I told you how much I love you guys. 😉 Seriously, I’ve always wanted to make a jam. My grandma used to make preserves all of the time and they were phenomenal. I just don’t have the time or the patience (mostly the patience) for canning. And as you know I’ve been wanting to try figs too!

  3. rutheh says:

This jam would be wonderful in the Split Second Cookies recipe. Oh my. I am going to make it and try.

  4. ChgoJohn says:

    That does look good. YUM!

  5. Holly says:

Jam, jam, jam. Going to be missing my daily fix of recipes and inspiration!

  6. That jam looks extremely sexy. Nearly sexy enough to lure me away from my all time favourite – apricot.

  7. fatisrecipes says:

Oh disappointment. Such a good jam recipe but no picture of it boiling like all your other jam recipe posts! 😦

  8. I love a good jam.. and this looks so easy to make. I think I should try to make this and share it with my mom. Thanks for posting this

  9. Yvette says:

I love fig jam and the inclusion of plums I’m sure gives it a beautiful dense flavour.

  10. niasunset says:

We love so much fig jam but I have never tasted and heard plum/fig jam. Seems so beautiful and should be so delicious too, they both. But could you tell me which kind of fig, fresh or dried? Thank you dear Rufus, with my love, nia

  11. Oooo YUM! Can’t wait for my figs now! The first couple of leaves have started to sprout so, we are one step closer to making this fan-tab-u-lous jam!
    Have a happy weekend.
    🙂 Mandy

  12. You guys are my heros!
I have some plums that I needed to use soon…will be making this over the weekend for sure

  13. As someone with a fear of canning I love this! Now I can make jam too!

  14. Eva Taylor says:

Are they fresh figs, or dried? Fresh figs are terribly expensive in Toronto – we recently paid $1.99 Canadian dollars for ONE!

  15. Fig jam? Never even heard of it. But the picture makes me crave it. It looks oh-so-good.

  16. Where’s my spoon…

  17. Oh, my…would this ever be great with bleu cheese!
And why would anyone be surprised about the figs? They grow like weeds down where ya’ll live… 😀

  18. Yes, this would be great with pork loin. And with plums…yum. Wonderful idea. Again, thank you.

  19. bet this would be delicious with goats cheese too

  20. Kelly says:

Fantastic! The word ‘dump’ reassures me that it’s quick too! 🙂

  21. Sissi says:

This jam is incredibly tempting for someone (e.i. me) who lives in a region where figs are not cheap and where plums, when in season, cost almost nothing. Allspice used in a jam is completely new to me! (I use it for example in my ketchup and pickles) Thank you for this unusual recipe! I might even try it soon…
t’s funny, I’m just in the middle of jam (peaches) and ketchup making process…

  22. Rachel says:

Or just gimme a spoon… Mmmmm!! (grin)

  23. Lea Ann says:

I’m loving this! Especially the pork part. Always love that sweet/salty thing.

  24. Chef Scar says:

Gotta try this. Fruit and pork is great combination.

  25. spicegirlfla says:

YEAH!! NO CANNING!!! I will admit tho I’ve taken some of your canning recipes and simply made a small amount that I did not have to can and just use thru the week. Which is similar to this post here and one I must try. I love the fig blend as I’m a huge fig fan. This would be fabulous with pork.

  26. Looks very sexy and luscious – must be that beautiful colour. And hardly worth canning as I don´t think it will hang around for long!

  27. Perfect timing for this recipe…just got some figs and need to use them before traveling. Thx!

  28. That looks so very good! Our daughter looked in our cabinet the other day and told us we COULD NOT buy any more jams, jellies or preserves until we ate what we have! We always buy local when we’re on vacation. Perhaps making my own wouldn’t count as ‘buying more’! Silly child! She wasn’t so good about doing what I told HER!

  29. Colline says:

Reading your jam recipes has got me thinking that I should overcome my fear of making jam and give it a go! You make it sound so simple.

  30. Courtney says:

Made my first jam ever this year – and this looks even easier. And I’ve honestly never had plum jam before (let alone with figs). Sounds very tasty.

  31. ....RaeDi says:

We are still waiting for our two figs to ripen. Still contemplating what to do with them, maybe we can use (I kid you not) the four plums we have on our two plum trees (that is a total between them and one of our apple trees has one apple, we have had bumper crops for several years and T thinks this is a rest year for them, but quite comical don’t you think?)

This looks delicious, the color is fantastic, I want some….RaeDi

  32. Caroline says:

I seriously need to find/become best friends with someone who has a fig tree. The hunt starts now. You guys have made way too many great recipes with them. This jam sounds delicious!!

  33. Awesome! So easy and those with small kitchens, aka me, this is very useful.

  34. Amy says:

I’m one of those people who is terrified to try canning. I’m worried that the glass jar will explode if I do it wrong, and send shards of glass flying everywhere, taking out my eyes. I know that probably won’t happen, but in the meantime, I think I’ll stick to quick jams like this delicious looking one, thank you very much 🙂

  35. I have to try this. I have always meant to learn how to do jam like this but never have.

  36. JamieAnne says:

    this looks fabulous! 🙂

  37. TasteFood says:

I confess to a fear of canning. This is perfect for me.

  39. Joanne says:

CHEERS to no canning lol. I have all these ingredients in my fridge!!! I’m definitely making this. I found some beautiful black mission figs at the grocery store (AND they were buy one get one free)!

  40. peasepudding says:

I love the idea of the figs with the plums, but then I love both fruit. Quick jam is always a good idea.

  41. ambrosiana says:

I would have never thought it contained figs!! I love that you make an apparently difficult recipe into a simple one!!

  42. Charles says:

Impressively easy, fast looking jam recipe… I like! I’m going out tomorrow to pick blackberries – can’t wait to get my jam on myself!

  43. Yuri says:

Panda wants jam. I’ve only made it once… this one looks fantastic!

  44. You almost make me think this is simple enough that I could start jamming. Almost….:)

  45. i’ve wanted to make my own jam for the longest time! this sounds great!
