I’ve had awful luck with blueberries this year. Don’t get me wrong, the berries themselves have been amazing. I’ve just made a series of kitchen mistakes, for example not adding a thickener to a blueberry pie. (My dutiful, pie-loving husband still ate, err drank, it.) I made a lovely blueberry sauce from The Silver Spoon, but the simple custard to go with it never set. This can happen when you forget to add sugar when you beat the egg yolks. I tried to thicken it with cornstarch — twice — when Greg wasn’t looking. The blueberry sauce called for draining the liquid and well I’m not one to let all that juicy goodness go, so here’s what I concocted. Store-bought blueberry juice, or a mixed berry juice will work just fine. If it’s sweet, skip the simple syrup. I’ve included the super simple blueberry sauce recipe in the notes below in case you’d like to have a martini one night and blueberry pancakes the following morning.
Midnight Martinis
- 3 ounces vodka
- 1 ounce Chambord
- 4 ounces blueberry juice
- 1 ounce simple syrup
Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake to incorporate. Divide between two martini glasses. Garnish with fresh blueberries.
Notes: Blueberry juice can be messy. If I were really clever, I’d garnish my next round with these sugared berries over at Gourmandistan. To make the blueberry juice from scratch, combine a tablespoon of sugar and two tablespoons of water. I threw in a splash of lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until dissolved. Add 2 cups blueberries and cook for 15 minutes. Remove from heat, let cool and drain juice.
I’ll dive in with you! That looks FAB! 😀
Fabulous! Simply fabulous! I’m sure your pie and blueberry sauce were delicious – even if they didn’t look right. 😉 I’m sure I still would have eaten all of it up. Seriously – I ate blueberry sauce (and/or pie) every night while we were in Maine. I’m going through withdrawl!
Thanks, Kristy. We actually served the pie to guests, I was a bit horrified but they liked pie in liquid form.
Must have a ton of antioxidants in there. Good for your health!
Exactly!
Yum! I recently discovered canned blueberries in syrup (they are very expensive otherwise, over $30 a kilo in season) – this would be perfect for this drink. Love the fact you “saved” what otherwise would have been discarded. 🙂
We do hate wasting food.
Rufus, you are one ferocious mad scientist…I love how you “saved” the day and made a midnight martini…to dive into! Wonderful.
That’s one heckuva cocktail you poured there. I can just see myself, after having one too many, hailing a cab with a big blue stain on my shirt. Not pretty — and I’m not talking about the shirt.
I even managed to get blueberry juice on the KitchenAid, which was just an innocent bystander.
Great minds think alike! I made a cocktail tonight with frozen grapes on a skewer as a garnish!
Oh, that’s a great idea!
Three cheers for awesome husbands ;)! Chambord is an awesome liquor. I bet this is great!
I did marry well, Joshua.
Keep the drinks coming – I think blueberries work out more expensive than vodka here, so I guess a martini with a twist is more likely to happen here. Great pic.
I just always figure alcohol has to be cheaper in Europe. I know it’s more expensive here in the South than it was on the West Coast.
With all these drink recipes.. you guys are gonna drive me to drink LMAO. I also forgot to tell you.. I made your Bellini for a girlfriend of mine and she loved it. I don’t know how I can make a drink but don’t want to drink it lol.
Thanks, Kay. Good to know. We try to do some unspiked ones, but they are in the minority on the site.
Aha!! YES!!! I bought “Blueberry Juice” during American week at Aldi’s here in Germany and I wanted to find cool drinks to make with it. FOUND IT! This little gem you posted is perfect! I might make those tonight! :-))
Cool, great timing.
Stunning – worth getting messy for! And nothing wrong with a drink in a pie 🙂
My husband sure didn’t think so!
I will drink my pie any day! You 2 are amazing!
Thanks, Maris!
“Shrink me down and I would dive in there” well said. Excellent writing, fantastic photo. Dude, I don’t even particularly care for blueberries and I want one.
If I shrink down, can I dive in there with you? Superb!
🙂 Mandy
Ha, the juice is fine come on in! Even when I write the post, Greg writes the photo captions, the photos are his too. And his captions always crack me up!
Excellent Photo, great composition. I wanna dive there too
I was pretty excited about the color of the drink, I knew Greg’s photo would be amazing!
Blueberry pie is always worthy of eating…or drinking, and I suspect this martini might be just the accompaniment.
Ha, thanks!
I would love to dive in too! It’s a lovely and original idea! I see you use often Chambord (I have never seen it nor tasted, I must check in my French shops)
We try to use it sparingly, really strong raspberry flavor. It’s pricey hence our sparing use of it. We like Grand Marnier too, but a bottle will last us two years.
What a great color that martini has! Good move on not wasting that precious juice!
We pay too much for blueberries to do that!
Fabulous photo!
Wine-o’s that we are around here, we don’t do many mixed drinks, but Hubby likes the occasional martini. I’ll see what he thinks about this one…Blueberry season is winding down, but I might get another cup or two!
Berry season is always over too fast.
Brilliant idea Katherine! I’m lovin’ your mixed drink recipes. You make me want to drink more alcohol and I don’t even like to drink much! Though I’m like Kay, I like to make mixed drinks at parties for friends and family, I’ll take a taste and then serve it to them but I can never drink a whole drink!
That’s happened to me many times when a recipe goes wrong, but my hubby and kids still eat it…..that is if it’s still edible. I bet that blueberry pie tasted awesome even though Greg drank it! LOL
We do make some strong drinks. With this sort, I usually do just the one.
I think one of those would put me away for the night pretty handily.
Maybe your cocktail could become the official drink of Maine.
Ha, I’ll have to send some inquiries on that.
Love those little blueberries on the skewer.
A friend got those for me years ago at BevMo. So useful.
If it has blueberries, I will like it. Looks great!
Thanks, Southern Lady!
That looks amazing Katherine!
Thanks!
Sounds like a great summertime cocktail. Can’t wait to try it!
Thank you!
Ritchey will love this! Blueberries are his favorite! Thank you!
Thanks! Let us know if you try it!
Oh for sure you two know how to party!! blueberry martinis followed by blueberry pancakes! I have to remember this when I celebrate with my yearly blueberry pancake treat!!
You know you’re welcome anytime, you’ll just have to bring some gourmet jello shots!
I could have used this cocktail last night. 🙂
Uh oh, well tomorrow’s Friday!
o0o i like the whole dramatic theme of the photo…the blueberry sword and the pool of blood…delicious!
Ha, I’m glad someone picked up on the theme. If it were close to Halloween we’d have put a fake eyeball in there.
I’d drink it….looks fabulous. Blueberries are one of my favorites. I’m trying this.
Let us know what you think! I know you make some mean martinis.
Your Midnight Martini rocks!!! This is such a creative way of making martinis!!
Thanks, we’re always playing around with martinis. Greg likes dirty martinis. I like the fruity ones!
Love how you found a way to make use of the leftover blueberry juice, Katherine! My grandma would be so proud–she’d always tell us to think about the starving kids in Africa when we didn’t finish the food on our plates. So, this is a great way to use everything up, ha! Looks delicious.
Sometimes I think we have a Depression-era mentality about saving stuff and using whatever we can. Composting, making broth and such. But grandma would balk at what we spend on food!
Looks beautiful and indulgent!
Why thank you!
How cute is that little cocktail pick?! I have never done much with blueberries, but I imagine you end up as messy as when I do stuff with beetroot. A bloodbath! I bet this cocktail is ‘well tasty’!
Beautiful drink… and I agree about diving in!! Great drink creation!
Katherine,
This looks Amazing! Sometimes mistakes turn into new recipes. Good for Greg that he drank the pie! 😉
Nice. Midnight martinis. That’s the way to go!
