I couldn’t quite execute my plan to finish this before Greg awoke one recent Sunday. When he came in doing his Shaun of the dead walk, the kitchen was in a state. The top was off the Grand Marnier, but that may not have fazed him since it was 10 a.m. after all. Three different honeys were on the counter, it’s very crucial you pick the right one, and the butter on the griddle was starting to smoke. I also had flour on my face, egg on my hand and was singing Beyonce. I can’t carry a bucket much less the tune that goes in it. My cooking process is actually a lot like that of the woman below. The best part about cooking breakfast for your spouse? He gets the cleanup. Sorry about the griddle and sorry I got honey on the dog.
French toast
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon marmalade
- 1/2 cup milk
- 8-10 slices of stale bread (depending on the size)
Whisk wet ingredients together. Go ahead and throw two slices of bread in to start soaking. Set aside. If using a griddle go ahead and start heating it up.
For figs
- 1 pint figs, sliced in half
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp Grand Marnier
In a small frying pan, melt butter. Whisk in honey to combine. Toss in figs and drizzle the liquor over. Cook over medium heat until tender about five minutes. Set aside.
For cream
- 4 ounces mascarpone
- 1 tbsp powdered sugar
- 1 tbsp Grand Marnier
- 1-2 tbsp cream
White a hand mixer, beat mascarpone, sugar and liquor. Add cream a tablespoon at a time until it’s reached your desired consistency. Set aside.
To assemble: Dip bread in egg mix and cook on griddle or in frying pan until egg on both sides is cooked, about two-three minutes on each side depending on how hot the griddle is. Once all the toast is cooked divide toast between two to four plates and top with figs and cream. A little extra honey is good too.
YUM
That is just sinful. I love it!
I look like that in the kitchen frequently. Flour on my face, and not just for show.
Katherine, these look lovely. Love the Shawn of the Dead reference and the entire post! 🙂
Thanks, Jamie!
This looks so good!!
Thank you for putting a smile on my face this morning..
I really need to get some figs ASAP
A breakfast that would have been a bit too much for me – but, God, it looks great
It was too much for us, but we soldiered through!
Every time I look and read your post It makes me crave for that particular food. Today’s post is delightful. French toast with a yummy twist.
You have such a great style of writing, so funny! Hope Greg enjoyed his very delicious (and low cal 😉 ) breakfast. Did he have to clean the dog as well as the kitchen?!
The dog happily cleaned himself!
This is an absolutely amazing effort on breakfast… Wow I am so impressed. I am such a fan of standard weekend breakfast fare that I never leave tried and tested bacon eggs pot of tea… But maybe, just maybe, in the name of research I should try to go with something a little more adventurous. As ever, very impressed katherine xx
Thanks, Holly! But should GF be doing your breakfast?
Wow thats what you call a breakfast! Yum I would want to wake up everyday with that on the table
I loved your post!!! Funny and delicious!!! The french toast looks beautiful!!!
Ok, that’s it! You two have to open up a restaurant. Just make sure it’s in Chicago!
Now THAT’s a breakfast! Impressive!
That looks simply amazing! I envy breakfast at your house.
Haha, cute little post! And oh my gosh, that flavor combination sounds AMAZING. Mmmm, mascarpone….
What a way to start out the day…from food to spirit…so funny.
ohmy, figs and marscapone sound like a match made in heaven. I always use breakfast as an excuse for sinful food … I’ve got all day shed the calories and the guilt. 😉
I am seriously doing something wrong – I cook Pete breakfast every weekend and I still have to do the dishes – perfect looking breakfast you made Greg, well worth doing the dishes for.
🙂 Mandy
Oh my gosh. I love it. I’m drooling just looking at it.
Sounds like my kitchen in canning season… Makes Hubby nuts when it’s a wreck!
That stack of French toast is a work of art!
Bwa ha ha! I remember that commercial and I can totally imagine this scene. Sounds about like how I cook (and clean – I used to clean while “singing” Beyonce). LOL! The breakfast looks great too!
Cute. I’m sure he didn’t mind the cleanup after dining on figs and mascarpone, oh and French toast too.
Wow! That’s an impressive way to greet the day . . . and US! 😀
That looks incredible. Breakfast and dessert on a plate – delicious!
Thanks for such an amusing post – I love the honey on the dog – although in our house it would be honey on the cat! Your french toast looks amazing!
This sounds absolutely devine! I never though to have figs with french toast, fabulous! And the marscapone cream…wow, over the top! You did it again!!
Hah! That’s what I love about cooking, Hubs has to clean! 🙂 And that french toast looks divine!
That looks fantastic. I love all of the fig posts this week – I need to find a tree to babysit…
Sometimes, when I cook, not only do I look like the woman in the ad, but the kitchen looks like a battlefield too! This breakfast looks divine! You will soon be able to write a fig cookery book 🙂
i just love french toast! but my main goal to visit your blog THIS time was to ask something…have you ever made baked zucchini fries??? if so what do you suggest?..i was going to coat the slices with seasoning and rice flour with egg whites…idk im confuzzeled
I sure haven’t and Greg hasn’t either that I recall. Sounds like a good research project for us!
Ha, this is Katherine forgot to sign out as Greg!
Your posts are the best! I love figs and they are just starting to ripen here in Nashville. I am keeping my eye on my neighbor’s trees and as soon as they are ready they will become this very wonderful recipe of yours….
This looks wonderful. He should appreciate all that you do for him. lol. Figs are great. Have a good week.
This cracked me up- those are the reasons I make my boyfriend go out until I finish cooking- I always have flour and God knows what else everywhere… even the dog.
Oh my.. this looks divine. I mean sinful. I can’t even get my words together from looking at this photo. I totally want french toast now. See what you did lol.
What a scrumptious looking breakfast! Love the Grand Marnier splash!
What an amazing sounding breakfast! I thought I was doing well by making blueberry pancakes but phew…this is just extravagant! Unless, of course, it’s breakfast for dinner. 🙂
Looks like you are getting some great mileage out of those figs!
That stack looks absolutely amazing.
Great idea! I was wondering what to do with my leftover mascarpone cheese! Thanks for a great idea 🙂
this looks amazing! How did you get the french toast to stack without falling! I’m am definitely bookmarking this, genious!
It was a thick wheat bread. Maybe that helped.
I haven’t had Grand Marnier with breakfast… yet…
You should probably write this on your goal list. 5k in under 20, triathlon, Grand Marnier for breakfast.
What an hilarious post ! And your photos really do that dish justice.
So much for me to catch up on! Loving all the figs stuff, I wish I had fresh ones!
I am tone defunct too! I have three figs on my tree, I wonder do you think enough for this? It looks delicious….RaeDi
I guess if you just make one piece of French toast!
T has stated that they will be divided equally! We are both on watch of the Fig Tree; it is ridiculous how two grownups (?) could act this way over a couple of figs! I was thinking of perhaps a six inch custard tart with these floating on top, what do you think? And of course it will be divided down the middle! I think I will pick up a pint at the store and have this french toast as a surprise brunch this weekend!….RaeDi
Ha, just wait there’s one more good one coming! Mean aren’t we?
