A New Door

The next thing to do in our kitchen remodel was install a new patio door. We went with a French door for two main reasons. One, we could get big things in and out of the house without taking them apart, like the refrigerator. Two, they look great and are perfect for a party.

We also got a new patio door because the old one was a flimsy sliding glass door which provided very little security and let in the cold air in the winter and hot air in the summer.

So to start we had to knock out the old door and cut 3/4″ of brick from the wall.

Cutting the brick was easy using a brick blade in a skill saw to score a starting line, then finishing the cut with a grinder. Then we reframed the opening and hung the new door. A tube of sealant foam, three tubes of silicon, half a bag of mortar and a mess of joint compound and the door was sealed and in.

The gaps are almost filled and ready for finished molding.

A new set of locks and some interior molding and the door is finished, except for the framing. Now to tile the floor.

Is that water I see through the trees off the deck? You have a river view? Just the thought makes me happy…Just like seeing the demise of a 70’s-era slider! :)

looks exactly like ours. We too took out our sliding door and replaced it…Then we added more french doors to our patio as we enclosed that and then a double set of sliding doors on one side, and the glass from a set of sliding doors on the other side..so it’s now a sun room. love french doors, but we wanted to have some screens for the summer

  6. Loving the new door my friend. It’s always nice having a view :)

  7. And so much lovely light!
