By Katherine
My husband started this blog a year ago today, with a post on a recent trip we’d made to North Coast Brewing Co. in Fort Bragg, California. Let’s just say he enjoyed himself.
Greg, now aka Rufus, is wonderful at many things as anyone who’s stopped by the blog knows. He’s an amazing photographer (see below), cook and avid gardener. But he’s terrible at remembering dates. He forgets his own birthday — no that’s not an exaggeration. The 4-13-03 engraving on his wedding band is my not so subtle way to ensure he never misses our anniversary. So I’m taking the reins today to mark the blog’s one-year anniversary. Mainly I’d like to say thank you to the many readers we hear from on a regular basis.
Thank you for coming into our kitchen:
Thank you for following along on our journeys:
Thank you for not chastising us when we eat this for breakfast:
Or this:
Thank you to the fellow bloggers who inspire us to make things like this:
Or this:
Or this:
Thanks for offering the best advice and the sincerest of condolences when this happens to the garden:
Thank you for stopping by for cocktails:
Or maybe just lemonade:
And dessert:
Thanks for laughing along when things didn’t quite work out:
Or were more painful than expected:
Thanks for the comments and the suggestions, the birthday wishes and the jokes. Thanks for trying our recipes. Thanks for the laughs and the stories, the awards, the links and the discreet e-mails alerting us to a misspelling. Thanks for making this so fun.
Thanks for reading.
Great shots! Congratulations on one year of successful blogging and many thanks for the hours of enjoyment! Rich
Thanks, Rich!
Of all the foodie blogs here I like yours best. Great blend of basic recipe, technique and a little background. Also, your food is awesome, and by the way your kitchen has a great floor plan though yes, I’d change the overall color scheme.
Thanks for what you do online. It is awesomesauce.
Thanks, man that means a lot. There’s some great blogs out there. Yep, the green cabinets aren’t for everyone.
Happy Blogaversary! Lookin’ good for one year.
Ha, thanks!
YAY!!!! Congratulations on your one year!!! I LOVE your blog and you feel like friends 🙂
Thanks, Katherine was looking at the comments with me and she went aww when she saw yours.
Congrats on 1 year! What an amzing accomplishment. I read your blog through my email and especially enjoy my Wednesday evening emails (the cocktails). I am usually just wrapping up writing my Thursday cocktail post as I get your email.
Thanks for sharing with us!
Hey thanks. We’ve had fun doing our cocktails and reading yours too.
Thanks for the retrospective. I’m a recent subscriber and expect to be around when you celebrate your 2nd anniversary. Greg looks like a kid to these 55 yr old eyes. 🙂
Thank you, on both counts.
Happy 1st Birthday! I’m so happy to have found your blog. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂
Thanks and you’re quite welcome.
This is one of my favorite blogs in the blogosphere. You and Greg entertain us with great stories and entice us with delicious dishes.
Happy Anniversary . . . On with the dance!
Thanks, Nancy! No dancing here, we have four left feet!
Congrats on your first anniversary. We hope that you have many more.
We hope so too, thanks.
Happy Blogiversary! You and Greg are awesome people and I’m glad we’re connected 🙂 I love this blog and enjoy reading your posts. Panda hugs 😀

cheers to your first anniversary! and of course, you celebrate the occasion with yet another stellar blog post. thanks again for the lighthearted stories and the foodie inspiration!
ps – thank you, thank you, thank you for introducing me to roasted fennel. 🙂
You’re welcome! That’s so funny, it’s one of those ingredients we love but has so many detractors. It’s almost as bad as posting sambucca or Brussels sprouts. But we won’t stop!
Yay! Happy one year guys. Keep doing what you are doing, as we all love it.
Thanks, we were having fun answering some questions from a certain tag yesterday, still have to get that up.
Happy Anniversary! Definitely you had entertained a lot of us with your recipes (specially the twists of alcohol), gardening and kitchen tips.
Thanks, Raymund!
Wonderful post, Katherine! Congrats to you and Greg on a great year of blogging. Looking forward to many more!
Thanks! Greg’s cooking and photos always inspire me so it’s fun to do this with him.
What more can I add to the well deserved comments above – congratulations, you have a very beautiful and entertaining blog and I love the way you work together on posts. Keep up the wonderful work and here´s to the next year of amazing cocktails, recipes, trips and adventures in the garden…can´t wait to see what you´ll do!
Thanks, same here. We always think of you at the grocery’s olive bar and when we have gazpacho!
Congratulations on being one!
Thanks, Ayako!
Heartfelt congratulations! Considering the range and quality of your posts, one would think you’ve been doing this for years. Cent’ anni!
Thanks, John!
Awww, this is such a wonderful post. Congrats for how far you’ve come with the blog, looking forward for the many years to come 🙂
Thanks, Fati!
Happy 1st Blogoversary! What an incredible first year it has been! I am looking forward to being around for the next year.
🙂 Mandy
Thanks, Mandy!
Many happy returns of the day. looking forward to the next year of gardening, eating and drinking and general merry making. Oh, and the first photo is just TOO funny! Thank you 🙂
Ha, my hands are all over the blog, but my face isn’t, but that was the first picture posted. Thanks for your kind words.
Happy Anniversary! Now Greg has a way to remember the date:) May my blog one day have such loyal and encouraging fans.
Nah, he’ll need a reminder next year too. Thanks, Rachel.
Congratulations on one year. What a well deserved run! The lemonade picture/pitcher was among my favorites. My family thanks you for inspiring me to try biscotti, crab cakes, turkey tetrazzini, cranberry raspberry sauce, green bean casserole without those dried onion rings, and more. Thank you for being such wonderful, encouraging hosts.
I think you’ve probably tried more recipes of ours than any other reader, for which we’re grateful. Thanks, Georgette.
Congratulations dear Katherine and dear Rufus. You are both in my life since I have met with your beautiful blog. It was always so inspirational and fascinating your posts… I am so glad to meet with you both. And million thanks for all your sharings with us. And now, I can see dear Rufus in my mind with his smiling face too 🙂 My Best wishes for you both and also for your blog, Blessing and Happiness, with my love, nia
Thanks, Nia, you always say the nicest things. It’s always nice to see a comment from you.
Congrats! Hope you get as much enjoyment out of creating for this blog as we all do reading it!
Depending on the ingredients, I think sometimes we have more fun. Enjoy the rest of your weekend with the family!
Happy Blogday! May you have many more…
Peace, Phil
Thanks, Phil.
Happy First Anniversary to your blog! You are always such an inspiration to me when “the blogging gets rough” – I don’t know how you do it! Keep up the great work!
That’s so nice, thank you!
Wow, I thought you must have been doing this so so much longer than a year! Incredible work in a year, you are a one stop food inspiration. You combine a perfect anecdote, picture, recipe combo that really gets us readers inspired every day! Love it xx
Wow, thanks Holly!
Thank you for sharing your recipes with us. I look forward to reading the posts that pop into my email account every week. Congratulations on a job well done.
Thanks, Colline!
Happy anniversary! You have done an amazing job this year (even though I don’t follow you from the beginning, which I sincerely regret). You have been my inspiration for cocktails, my encyclopedia of Southern American cuisine (not to mention Italian and other ethnic recipes I am always surprised to find here) and the source of my daily laugh while reading your hilarious posts. It is always a pleasure to come back. Thank you for being there and congratulations!
It took awhile to get in the groove, don’t worry. We live in the South so those ingredients have inspired us, but the Italian stuff is what I grew up with. Thanks for your kind words Sissi.
Happy anniversary! You’ve made a great place for yourselves and for the rest of us to enjoy over here :).
Thanks so much.
Congratulations! Wow, I thought you’ve been around for longer than a year! I truly enjoy your daily posts (which always amaze me…that’s alot of work!) BTW, your blog began on my bday! Imagine that, I know we have some past connections somewhere!!
Katherine really is convinced we’re long lost cousins. Happy birthday!
I love your blog and your recipes…..don’t stop. Looking forward to lots more.
Thanks, Sandra!
Congratulations on your birthday. It is always a pleasure to read your posts.
Thanks, Karen!
Happy Blogiversary! It’s been fun to be here (sort of) from the beginning-ish. Or at least for most of it!
Thanks, Sara. Those first days were kinda lonely.
Congrats! Looking forward to year two. Keep up the good work!
Cheers!
G-LO
Thanks, we are too.
Congratulations I am so glad Luanne sent me your blog I have enjoyed every reading Please keep it up and best wishes for many many more years.
Thanks, Carol Ann!
Wonderful selection of photos and posts to commemorate the year. Happy Blog Birthday! 🙂
Thanks, Robin!
Happy blog anniversary, Greg! And thank you for sharing all of your wonderful recipes especially the drinks (oh yeah)! I may not comment all the time (lack of English words), but I do visit and always enjoyed your writing. Well, my friend enjoy the anniversary because many more will come. Congratulations and wish you more Success!
~ ray ~
Thanks, Ray that means a lot! I’m enjoying your blog too and so glad to see the Facebook posts pop up.

Thank you and you’re quite welcome.
I remember that first photo! I’ve happily followed you along and enjoyed your stories… One of my friends asked me who “Rufus” was:) it’s a distinctive blog name! It was nice looking through your year of memories… a toast to many more!
You remember the first photo? That makes my day. I thought only Katherine and my parents read that one.
🙂 It’s the grin that made it so memorable… couldn’t forget that one!
Oh, what a beautiful post Katherine… I loved revisiting with you. A hearty congratulations to Rufus on his first year Blogging Anniversary – I know there will be many more to come!!
Thanks, Kelly. We’ve had so much fun and really enjoyed meeting other bloggers too. And it’s fun to do this with Greg.
Happy Anniversary (um, Birthday?) guys!! It’s a great blog with such a friendly / heart-warming / genuine vibe with awesomely tasty recipes. You’re an inspiration to us all. Here’s to many (many) more years of success!
Thanks, man!
(drum rolllllllllllllll!) Congratulations to one of my favorite bloggers for being so “on it” all year. I have enjoyed your posts so much and look forward to another year peeking inside your life.
Thanks, Teresa. When I posted that tart the other day with crooked icing, though, gotta admit I thought oh this would never fly in Teresa’s kitchen!
Happy 1st Bloggiversary Rufus and Katherine! I just love your blog- from the pictures to the recipes to the anecdotes- and look forward to year two of culinary inspiration! Thank you!
Thanks, Laura!
Happy one year bloggaversary!!! That is just awesome. Can’t wait to see what you have up next. 🙂
Thanks, Courtney!
Happy Birthday! May your second year be as wonderful as your first.
Ha, we’ll try! Thank you.
Aw, I love this post 🙂 Happy Blog-iversary!!!
Thanks, Amy!
Congrats guys!!! I always enjoy coming back an reading about your travels, gardening and food! Keep up the good work!
Thanks, you were one of the first blogs I started reading by the way.
Many happy returns!
Thanks, Michelle!
Congratulations. I know I’m fairly new here, but the images above is a good reminder of the treasures that anyone can find here. The KY Bourbon Trail image brought I smile as I just made my first visit there this year … after living 35 years in Cincinnati with the trail being 2-3 hours away!
Thanks! Isn’t it funny how we take the things close to us for granted? I do enjoy your comments, especially on wine!
Congrats on your blog birthday! Keep up the good work. I am so inspired by your gardening, I may have to try next spring for myself.
Thanks, Dara. With food prices as they are it does help to have a garden, even if it’s just potted herbs.
Happy Anniversary to your wonderful blog!!
Thanks so much!
Happy anniversary! I’ve enjoyed reading your blog every step of the way. Keep up the great work!
Hey thanks and back at you!
Happy Anniversary, you two. (I still remember when Katherine mentioned the cute new intern in the photo department – and now look at what you’ve churned out.)
Ha, I know Greg won’t touch this one because of the cute reference! Thanks, Lisa and he’s still as cute as he was then.
Congrats on your one year anniversary! Thanks for keeping things fun *and* informative – I enjoy following your adventures, and sometimes following your lead. Kudos to you Rufus! 😉
Thanks, Stef!
Happy First Bloggiversary!
How cool, I somehow thought your blog was older than that – I guess for blogs that means a compliment, right? If someone would tell me I look older than 51 (don’t you dare!) I’d trow a fit.
Here’s a virtual toast to many many MANY more years of Rufus!
Thanks, Sally. Yes that’s definitely a compliment!
Congratulations Greg and Katherine on your one year anniversary to your blog ! I’ve loved reading it and have learned soooo much from your trials and adventures. Keep it up !
Thanks and we’ve certainly lived vicariously through your blog. All those great restaurants…
Happy 1st blogiversary, I celebrate my 3rd this week too.
In case you don’t make a big stink about it, happy early blogversary.
Congrats! I’m still jealous of your brightly colored kitchen!
Thanks, glad someone besides us likes the color scheme.
Congratulations Greg and Katherine!!!! You guys are amazing and I know that my kitchen has certainly become a tastier place to be having found your blog. 🙂 Here’s wishing you many more years of delicious recipes and adventures. You guys are great and Mike and I are happy to “know” you. Cheers!
Back at you Kristy and thanks. We love how your blog is a family affair.
I am a bit late and I do apologize for that guys :).. BUT I have enjoyed being apart of your blog and I have watched it grow into this amazing place to be and read wonderful recipes. Congrats on your 1 year anniversary and I can’t wait for more wonderful recipes 🙂
Hey there. You were the first commenter who wasn’t related to or friends with us. It was so nice seeing your comments and thinking oh look someone found us.Thanks, Kay!
Congratulations Greg and Katherine – great round-up for a year in cyberspace! Can’t believe your blog is younger than mine? I always thought yours had been around way long 😮 I’ve been enjoying following your adventures… culinary and otherwise – always a pleasure! Long may they continue 🙂
Thanks, Charles!
Happy Blogoversary! Hope you’ll keep on having fun doing this! I really like that you both contribute to this blog. And after ages of manually calling up your blog, I finally managed to click the “subscribe” button…
Thanks, Kiki!
Congratulations! It’s amazing how many wonderful dishes, stories, recipes, and memories you have created for so many people in the last year. Awesome job. It’s always a pleasure to see the photos and beautifully presented dishes in my Inbox and on occasion fun to try and replicate them. Thanks for all the time and effort you’ve spent to share your talents!
Thanks, it’s always so fun when people tell us they tried something.
Happy Anniversary! You have a great blog! I enjoy every bit of it! AND I love your kitchen 🙂 The green is great!
Thank you. Katherine’s been throwing your herb blend in everything by the way.
Thanks Greg and Katherine for all your pictures, recipes, and stories–we’ve had so much fun following along!
Thanks, Mike!
Congratulations on your one year anniversary! I do so enjoy your blog!
Thanks and same to you!
Congrats! It’s been nothing short of an absolute pleasure to read you so far 🙂
Wow, thank you!
Happy Anniversary Greg and Katharine. I love your stories and your funny little quips beneath the photos. It’s been a pleasure to get to know you both; I had no idea how fulfilling blogging can be before I met you guys. Thank you to you too!
Thanks, Eva that’s so nice.
YAY Happy blog birthday!!!! Didn’t realize we started blogs at such close times. I love reading your blog and love each of your posts, and think it’s just the cutest that both of you write on here. YAY!!!!
Thanks, Joanne! You know we both love your blog too. I thought the same thing when I saw your one-year post.
Has it really only been one year?? I would have never guessed, but congratulations Greg and Katherine! Such a great accomplishment. I’m so glad to have found your blog, I always enjoy your delicious recipes, fantastic photos, and most of all, the snarky comments. 😉 But honestly, my mom might enjoy them even more. She loves to read the comments on my posts and always brings up your clever ones, haha.
Woops, I meant to say ‘witty’ comments!! Snarky wasn’t the right word at all.
Ah, the truth comes out Young Caroline!
My former English major self should be ashamed, haha.
I’m just teasing. We can be snarky over here!
Apologies for being late to the party, but I’m just catching up on my Reader from having the family in town for the holiday.
Congratulations on reaching the one year mark! Liz and I look forward to reading your guys’ future adventures in travel, food, and drink. Cheers!
Thanks, and no need to apologize at all. We look forward to seeing more from you too.
Congratulations and happy anniversary! I thoroughly enjoy coming here to drool over your food and read Katherine’s beautiful and witty posts. Not to say you aren’t witty Greg…not tryin’ to start anything. Have a great week!
What! My photo captions have made people cry! Seriously, thanks Geni!
Happy birthday!
OK, thanks on a random note the LAT is having a cookie contest and I’ve been meaning to tell you that for ages since you did so well in the burger one.
Congrats on 1 year! I love the detailed pictures and account of all that has happened in one year 🙂 Lovely kitchen, too!
Thanks, Sarah!
Congratulations on your anniversary! That kitchen makes me think of my dear departed mother every time I see it. She never had any colors that I can remember but green and yellow in her kitchen and yours is lovely. She would die for your kitchen all over again! I hope you have many more great years.
Thanks, Southern Lady. We always love when you visit and we love visiting your blog. We love our colorful kitchen too!
Happy 1st Blogiversary! Even though I found your blog only a short time ago, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and am slowly working back through the old posts. You two work so well together! I have especially enjoyed your beautiful, sometimes funny, pictures and the little peeks into your travels and culinary adventures. You both have awesome taste, in more ways than one! (By the way, keep those cocktails coming!) 😉
Every Wednesday night!
Happy 1st year in blogging!! What an accomplishment and it’s obvious that you’re both loved for your witty posts, beautiful pictures and awesome recipes (I’ve recreated a few in my kitchen, although it doesn’t look as cool as your lime green one). Thanks for giving us good reading and good food!
Well it’s not like we’re making beer caps high art, but I appreciate your comments and it’s fun knowing other people are using some of our recipes.
Congratulations on your 1 year anniversary, and thanks for sharing so many great recipes!
Thanks, Nancy!
Congratulations on your first year. I’m looking forward to the next one already.
Thank you, we are too.
Happy First Anniversary to your blog! I would have sworn you have been doing it longer than a year! Thanks for sharing so many wonderful recipes! 🙂
Thanks, Christina!
Happy one year! Isn’t it so exciting? I wish you many more years.
Thanks, Gina Marie!
Yay for Bloggaversaries! Happy 1st year you guys! I love that your blog is like ours…a mix of the good, the bad (when things go wrong) and the random. Your comments always make me smile too 🙂 I don’t know how you manage to post so often though…you must have a head so full of ideas just bursting to get out! Looking forward to the next year of creative posts.
Thanks for that comparison, your blog is always so fun to visit. As for posting so often, well there are two of us who clearly love eating, drinking and traveling. (One of us likes gardening too.)
Happy Belated Anniversary!! How many comments? You’re a legend, Rufus sends his love too, he enjoys reading as much as I do. Thanks for always keeping it real hombre!! xx
Rufus and his pink bandana!
Only one year old? I thought Rufus was much older than that! 🙂 You’ve certainly succeeded in creating an amazing blog with a hefty crew of followers. Great job! Looking forward to the years ahead.
I know I do look older than one, oh you mean the blog, thanks!
Happy Blogiversary!!! Congrats on all the wonderful posts over the last year. Looking forward to reading more =)
