Rufus turns one

By Katherine

My husband started this blog a year ago today, with a post on a recent trip we’d made to North Coast Brewing Co. in Fort Bragg, California. Let’s just say he enjoyed himself.

I know he looks older, kids beer will age you

Greg, now aka Rufus, is wonderful at many things as anyone who’s stopped by the blog knows. He’s an amazing photographer (see below), cook and avid gardener. But he’s terrible at remembering dates. He forgets his own birthday — no that’s not an exaggeration. The 4-13-03 engraving on his wedding band is my not so subtle way to ensure he never misses our anniversary. So I’m taking the reins today to mark the blog’s one-year anniversary. Mainly I’d like to say thank you to the many readers we hear from on a regular basis.

Thank you for coming into our kitchen:

Not quite John Deere green, but close

Thank you for following along on our journeys:

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail

Notting Hill

Watkins Glen, New York

Thank you for not chastising us when we eat this for breakfast:

Or this:

Thank you to the fellow bloggers who inspire us to make things like this:

Inspired by Two Spoons

Or this:

Chef Pandita's cupcakes

Or this:

The cake that isn't as pretty as the one on Things We Make

Thanks for offering the best advice and the sincerest of condolences when this happens to the garden:

Thank you for stopping by for cocktails:

Or maybe just lemonade:

And dessert:

Chocolate pudding, err zabaglione

Thanks for laughing along when things didn’t quite work out:

Our $78 broiled macaroons

Or were more painful than expected:

Beware the side effects of fig juice

Thanks for the comments and the suggestions, the birthday wishes and the jokes. Thanks for trying our recipes. Thanks for the laughs and the stories, the awards, the links and the discreet e-mails alerting us to a misspelling. Thanks for making this so fun.

Thanks for reading.

A gratuitous grill shot for Greg

About Rufus' Food and Spirits Guide

This blog attempts to collect some of the things I try to create with food and booze. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I fail. My hope is to entertain and maybe help people think a little harder about what they decide to eat and drink.
