Nothing will put a little fire in your belly like a little fire in your belly. Disclaimer: allow the flames to die out before drinking and maybe wear oven mitts.
Sambuca on the Fly
- 2 ounces Sambuca
- 3 espresso or dark roast coffee beans
- a match and nimble fingers
There are two schools of thought for how to make this drink. Some people soak the espresso beans in boiling water for a few minutes and then add them to the Sambuca. I prefer adding the beans to the Sambuca and then lighting it on fire. Let the flames go for about 15 seconds then blow out the drink and enjoy. The reason why some people soak the beans instead is to keep from burning any alcohol out of the liquor. I think the flames make the espresso beans taste better and let’s be honest, flaming drinks are just cool.
This may be one of my favorite warming drinks, but the last time we posted a recipe starring this anise flavored liquor we learned quite a few of our readers aren’t fans. So we decided to share some winning cocktails from other sites as well, all in lovely autumn colors or aromas.
Some of our recent favorites: The fizzy citrus and rosemary martini over at Wholesome Cook; the apple cider martini over at The Cultural Dish; the sophisticated and not at all green appletini over at Things We Make; the spiked apple crisp shooters over at Vintagebrocante (technically not a drink, but it has shooter in the title and alcohol in the whipped cream so who cares?); the cinnamon toast cocktail over at The Slow Roasted Italian; the honeycomb cocktail over at Teresa Blackburn’s “Food on Fifth” Blog (Hey, Linda pay attention it features limoncello!); and speaking of Linda over at Savoring Every Bite, check out her pumpkin spice lattes. What’s that you say? There’s no liquor in the recipe. Well that can be remedied! We think she’d approve.
Looks good! I like the disclaimer, hopefully no one has ever tried to drink it while it’s on fire… hahah
Apparently they have, check out Ruth’s comment below!
Alcohol and fire – dangerous combination ! Gorgeous photo 🙂
Thanks, Carolyn!
I’m more impressed by your photo. What a great shot!
Yep, we know you don’t like the anise so we had to do a cool photo and other links. (You’re definitely not alone!)
Evil…. I like it. I agree on the anise – yukkity. However, since you mentioned it, limoncello is my 2nd favorite shot, ice cold. 1st is Jack, straight, no flames. No fire needed since it does that by itself.
You know we have a recipe for limoncello, right? https://rufusguide.wordpress.com/2010/12/07/limoncello/
Love it. Great photo, too.
Thanks.
Excellent photo! Really stunning. And the disclaimer is no joke.
You are so right about the flames being totally OUT cause my friend Steve is an ophthalmologist and unfortunately has treated patients in the burn unit where their drinks were still aflame. Am I a downer or what? But after a couple of shots, who is noticing that the flame might still be aglow. I cringe when I even think of the consequences. This is what happens when you get older. You’ve heard too many stories and get more cautious and worry about carefree youth.
Yikes, well I don’t drink these often. If it makes you feel better I didn’t even get to drink this one. By the time the photo finished that liquor was gone. And it wasn’t in my belly.
Nothing will put a little fire in your belly like a little fire in your belly <- Sounds like something Stephen Colbert would say!! Disclaimer: allow the flames to die out before drinking and maybe wear oven mitts. <- hahaha
Thanks for the linky, they all sound delicious!
You’re welcome!
That photo is so frickin awesome
Thanks!
Ah, combining alcohol with fire is always a good idea. 😉
Love that pic! This will have to make an appearance at a party soon.
Maybe an Italian trip wrap party?
Oh I totally agree…flaming drinks are cool! I am loving that picture, too cool! I really haven’t made too many cocktails…my husband and I usually just enjoy beer or wine. I feel like I am missing out! 🙂
Well, wine and beer do go with anything.
Really fantastic photo! I love Sambucca but fiery drinks scare me. I never drank them and, although my Boss may not have approved, I did my best to discourage people from ordering them.
You know I did wonder if you had to make these in your bartending days.
Awesome picture
Thank you!
Burn, baby burn lol. You know, even though I’m not into alcoholic drinks.. I do want to learn to do this trick lol.
Well check out the shooters, so good and you can skip the schnapps in the whipped cream!
Brilliantly captured shot.
Have a happy day.
🙂 Mandy
Thanks, Mandy!
I once ended up with a nasty circular burn on the palm of my hand on a student night drinking these! I don’t think I can be trusted with flames and alcohol! (I don’t know why I put my hand over it!) Fab photo.
Ouch!
love the disclaimer! I have actually watched someone burn themselves trying to be clever with lit sambucca 🙂
Yikes, and then they probably never got to live it down either.
That is a hall-of-fame photo, Greg…You should frame that one.
Food on fire scares me…but I love the shot!
I bet Katherine will order bananas foster in NOLA next month just to watch them light it.
Oh I’m a fan, I adore sambuca and have had many flaming sambucas in my time – good fun! And great photo.
Oh I’m a fan, I adore sambuca and have had many flaming sambucas in my time – good fun! And great photo.
Thanks, Aimee!
What a beautiful drink, Greg; we all have a little pyro in us! We live Sambuca, it’s a great digestif after a greasy Greek meal!
Thanks, Eva. A digestif sounds great since the flavor’s so strong.
Ha,ha. This looks like a science experiment, Rufus.
Thanks, Georgette. I guess in a way it is.
Wow, great photo!
Thanks, Stef.
Wow! what a great photo!! How did you ever capture it like that!?! You know I’ll be making this one for sure! I do love Sambuca…that’s what “corrects” my espresso!! I’ve never heard of this before; definitely a show stopping drink! And it would be so cool for Halloween partying! Nice fall round up of drinks and thanks for the mention, as well as noting the drink I would like!!
Let’s just say it involved a black napkin, a tripod and a very low shutter speed. And you’re quite welcome for the shout out.
Hot … Stunning blue flame!
Thanks, it was actually too hot to drink. The glass cracked!
Very cool pic! I’d make these just for fun – even if I wasn’t going to drink them. 😉
Famous last words Kristy!
Oh this is so great – sambuca is so much fun and a delicious burn. I’m a little concerned about the nimble fingers aspect though.
You can play it safe and do the boiling water. Just don’t spill it!
Wow, that is AWESOME! How is it a blue flame? Is it that hot??
Yep, it really is. The black background makes it pop, but it is super hot.
A flaming drink?! WOW. Although, like some of the commenters from your previous drink, I’m not a fan of Sambuca. (Licorice = gross.) But it LOOKS good!
Thanks, there are definitely a lot of Sambuca detractors.
Beautiful shot! 😀
Thanks, Nancy!
Wow, what a great photo! You know, I had a really bad incident involving my drinking of sambuca a few years ago haha so I don’t drink it anymore, but I wouldn’t mind watching other people enjoy these fiery drinks!
I’ve never been able to drink lots of Sambuca. With that it’s one and done. But I feel your pain.
Dude! That photo is AWESOME!
While I enjoy licorice in all forms, drinking Sambuca usually results in nothing but trouble. People always talk about the trouble that occurs after too much tequila (and they are somewhat correct), but based upon my experiences, Sambuca is infinitely more dangerous. And so is Ouzo, it’s Greek distant cousin.
Tequila is only bad for so many people because there drinking the fake stuff in college. OK, stepping off my soap box.
I agree 100%. Always about quality vs. quantity. Then again… sometimes it’s all about quality AND quantity. Just depends on the day and the situation. 😉
Yep, quality will usually get you. Quantity will always get you!
That looks great (after the fire goes out). I’d end up burnt!! I just know it.
I have complete faith in your ability to not get burned.
The photo is incredible! You might win a cocktail photography competition! I haven’t drunk Sambuca for so many years! It reminds me of the first time I went to Milan and had lots of cocktails with Sambuca, orange juice (and maybe that was it). Anyway I loved it!
I think I’m quite an adventurous cook, but I would be too scared to burn my cocktail… it looks so tempting though!
Ha, now to find such a competition. Thanks, Sissi.
WIth this recipe you’ve resurrected memories from day’s gone by…
Wait for flames to die out. Drink shot of sambuca. Chase with Mickey’s widemouth ale. Repeat.
Glad I could provide some nostalgia.
Woah, that’s an awesome photo. I remember back in college we had a sorority dance and our dates took a fiery shot like this (not sure if they thought that would impress us), but it didn’t go over too well. Pretty sure they used 151…ick!
Ick, and they’re lucky it didn’t explode!
First time visitor. Wow … a lot going on here. Heck, the last three posts take one from a fire drink to compost to pumpkin bread. Seems like a place I need to return more often. Glad I found it.
Glad you found us. It’s a good day too this officially our first drink on fire post!
WOW! Like a magic! I loved it, you captured so beautifully, You are amazing. Thank you dear Rufus, with my love, nia
Thanks, Nia!
You guys are always so cool over there. I have never made a flaming drink…ever. Bananas, yes, meringue, once or twice but a drink, NEVER.
Since your kitchen’s out of commission, you need to exercise your creativity in other ways like lighting things on fire.
Really stunning, Rufus! Eye-popping! My husband and I had our first flaming drink on our wedding night – Spanish coffees – and we have them now on every anniversary. After this post, we may need to start celebrating half-anniversaries! : ) you think?
I love that tradition and yes I think that’s a perfect idea.
When I lived in London, My friend and I had a shot that you have to suck through a straw, while it’s flaming… It was called a Flaming Lamborghini… Only flaming drink I’ve ever had!
Good grief. Sounds kind of dangerous. Do you have the recipe?
I wish I did, I think it have a shot of everything in it! Here’s a link I found though… http://www.webtender.com/db/drink/2966
Wow, crazy! And I can’t quite picture Bailey’s and the blue stuff together.
Great post, gorgeous pic!!! Thanks for the shout out!
You’re welcome.
Wow thats the most beautiful photo I’ve seen in your blog. Awesome capture, well done
Thanks, Raymund!
Awesome photo! Totally creepy-looking drink. Please tell me that caption is a Doctor Who reference…
It’s good to know I am not the only fan of the Doctor
Sweeet!
Bands do this and they make us do it, too! Kinda fun if you’re a drinker. Great photo!
What a great way to set the mood for a gathering! Love the blue flames.
That is so cool! Er, hot! Well, either way, that’s an awesome photo!
Awesome shot!
Great job!!
Ok, wonderful shot, but sambuca? Ewww 😦 Way too many bad memories of sticky, aniseed stinking dirty glasses and wiping up spilled puddles of the slop in the bar I used to work at. I love the idea of the drink though… especially the coffee beans… although we’ll have to agree to disagree about the sambuca 😉
Gorgeous picture!! I love it!
Fantastic picture! Was it hard to get the exposure right?
nah, but the alcohol burned off by the time I finished!
Oh my, this almost looks dangerous. I can remember lighting moonshine to see if it was any good and it burned blue if it was the good stuff! Try some moonshine and orange kool-aid. You’ll never forget the experience! lol.
Oh gosh. I know where they sell moonshine-soaked cherries. Moonshine is making a comeback!
Nice picture, seems like a good drink…and definitely a blog I will be following
That looks so cool I almost want to attempt trying it.
This reminds me so much of when I was young and all th eItalian family got together. We children always wanted them to light the sambuca…fortunately they were all very obliging!
Nice work.
Loves me a hot boozy drink!
