Dandy brandy drinks

By Katherine

One more slice of fruit and you have breakfast

Brandy is a key ingredient in a drink we serve on Thanksgiving and in our cranberry sauce, so whenever we see it on sale in the fall we grab a bottle. Normally, we use the rest of the bottle for cooking, but this year we’re determined to try out some brandy cocktails. We’ve learned something in our experiments so far: I like brandy more than Greg does. (This may be because the stuff we buy for cooking isn’t exactly the highest quality.) He threw a splash of orange juice in his Old-Fashioned took a few sips and let me finish the rest. He then went into the kitchen to make a dirty martini. Knowing he wasn’t a fan of the stronger brandy drinks, I doubled the amount of orange juice in the second drink.

Brandy Old-Fashioned

  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 2 dashes bitters
  • splash of soda
  • 1 1/4 ounce brandy

Put sugar, bitters and soda in a tumbler, swirl around to incorporate. Add ice cubes and brandy. Garnish with orange slice or cherry or both.

Those oranges are burning my eyes

Burnt Orange (adapted from The Ultimate Cocktail Book)

  • 3 drops orange or Angostura bitters (we used chocolate bitters)
  • juice from one orange
  • 3 measures brandy

Pour ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Do the hippy hippy shake. Strain into martini glass. Decorate with orange slices.

This blog attempts to collect some of the things I try to create with food and booze. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I fail. My hope is to entertain and maybe help people think a little harder about what they decide to eat and drink.

I had never tried Brandy before last year when we went to a distillery – I like it with a stone fruit juice – but I think I have to try the bitters as that is a favourite of mine in gin πŸ™‚

  3. In France, the home of Cognac, they cannot sell it for love or money. The brandy industry is in dissaray in France, and were it not for the foreign demand, would be on its knees. I like your idea of brandy in cranberry sauce.

  4. One more slice of fruit and you have breakfast – love that! And as you might have seen, I’m big on orange in cocktails. Sunshine all around!

  6. Sissi says:

I wouldn’t mind the first drink for a late breakfast, even without an additional fruit. I think I have to start making drinks with fresh oranges soon. Thank you for a constant inspiration!

  7. I like a little brandy every now and then and that Burnt Orange looks amazing – weΒ΄ll soon be back in oranage season again here, so will give it a go (or two)!

I definitely like to cook with brandy but haven’t really had a drink with it!! I do add brandy to my sangria so I can get a sense how this would taste with the citrus blend. It truly looks like a lovely drink and making sure I have a good bottle of brandy will help it go down nice and smoothly !!

I love the idea of trying Brandy in cranberry sauce! That sounds so festive and holidayish! You have a great blog and I look forward to following. That bread pudding looks amazing too ( one of my all-time favorite desserts).

  14. Both drinks look fab! I also haven’t tried brandy in my mixed drinks but now think I might have to.

  15. Not a huge drinker of brandy myself but I’m always willing to experiment and try out your drink recommendations. Cheers!

  16. Caroline says:

I’m not much of a brandy drinker either, but brandy in cranberry sauce? Now that sounds like something I could handle. πŸ™‚

  17. nrhatch says:

    Yes, please.

Liquor is quicker . . . but Brandy is Dandy! πŸ˜›

  18. I have to agree with Greg on this one, I’d prefer a martini (only mine would have to be a mere splash of dirt and a hint of vermouth, anything more of either would just tip it to undrinkable for me! The cranberry recipe sounds wonderful; I usually add orange juice and rind to my cranberry sauce, but I love the idea of brandy! Cheers.

All good from this end, I love the bitters in it! I am a neat good brandy drinker as a rule, on the few occassions that i drink of course! So i am going to move over to france where they have tons of the stuff evidently! c

I have to admit that I’m not particularly fond of a Brandy Alexander — well, at least not the first one. I do, however, really like the third one and I find the fourth to be about the best cocktail in the universe — and I’ll be more than happy to tell the mixologist how I feel. For some reason, I can’t really say how I feel about the fifth Alexander. Go figure!

  28. cocktailogist says:

ah, thanks for this. i’ve been avoiding brandy cocktails… most likely due to an episode in my late teens that involved an entire bottle of E&J and subsequently waking up under a public restroom urinal. good times.

  29. Charles says:

Brandy is one of the few spirits I really love. My father is a real Armagnac fan, but I much prefer Cognac. It’s quite pricey, but if you ever get a chance to, pick up a bottle of Remy Martin XO. Pour a glass, put on some music, sit by a log fire and pretend like you’re the only person in the world. That drink is just liquid gold.

  30. ambrosiana says:

Just love it!! I love drinks with brandy and this is a very catchy one…!!!
