Paw lickin’ good

By Katherine

For moi?

We don’t mention our dogs often in our posts, but they are a constant presence in our kitchen, our home and our hearts. Coltrane, an incorrigible German shepherd mix who’s embarrassingly good at outsmarting us and has personal space issues, is 12. Mingus is 6, but sometimes still acts like the desperate-for-attention puppy Greg found abandoned in a box with his litter mates at a shuttered flea market. A Heinz 57, he’s a red devil who almost destroyed our rosemary bush so many times we lost count. He’d find the lowest point in the garden fence and use the bush as a landing pad. He’s either outgrown that or the bush has outgrown him, but every once in a while I swear I smell the faintest scent of rosemary on his coat.

Our dogs have impeccable timing. Mingus has learned exactly where to position himself under the coffee table — no small feat for a 43-pound dog — for a better shot at beating his brother, or us, to anything we inadvertently drop. Coltrane in his younger years once snatched a burger right out of its bun. Greg swears he only averted his attention for a second. I believe him. More recently when we finally sat down to a dinner Greg spent hours on, Coltrane tossed his cookies, right as Greg and I clinked wine glasses. (We intentionally left that charming little anecdote out of this post.) We try to keep Coltrane inside when we’re grilling, because singed back hair won’t prevent him from crawling under the firebox in search of goodies. We had to put a bracket on the cabinet under the sink, so he wouldn’t quietly paw it open, root discerningly through the trash, take exactly what he wanted and leave the cleanup for us. For an old guy, he’s surprisingly fast.

Coltrane was Greg’s first dog. He had me come meet his new best friend on one of our first dates. Expecting a squirming puppy, I pulled into the driveway and saw a 6-month-old, 50-pound dog, outsized ears and tail, big brown eyes, smack dab in front of a bay window, patrolling the neighborhood. He’s had my heart as long as Greg has.

Coltrane’s Cookies

  • 2 tbsp corn or vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 cups white flour

Combine oil, peanut butter and water. Add flour, one cup at a time. Quickly knead the dough into a ball. Roll into 1/4 inch thickness and cut into desired shapes. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.

Paw lickin’ Chicken

  • 3 cups white flour
  • 3/4 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 4 tbsp softened butter or margarine
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp milk

Combine flour, cornmeal, broth, butter. Knead dough for about three minutes. Roll into 1/4 inch thickness and cut into shapes. Beat egg and milk together and brush on biscuits. Bake at 325 for 35 minutes.

Notes: We’ve had these recipes so long, I no longer have the original source(s). If there’s anyone who could enlighten me, I’d welcome the input.

More doggy fun: Eat, Bark, Love has this great recipe for liver brownies. Savoring Every Bite has organic peanut butter biscuits. Or how about these spent grain peanut butter dog cookies over at Cheers Beers?

  1. What a good idea I really should try these instead of the table scraps.

  2. How gorgeous are your puppies? Well, I know they are a lil older but still adorable! And I’m sure they love you for all the yummy cookies you make for them – great idea! Love it! And you get to bake without the temptation of eating all of the cookies yourself!

    • Katherine says:

I saw that picture of Mingus and thought when did he get so much white in the muzzle. It’s harder to tell with him because he’s always had some white. But he’s so grown up!

  3. Stefanie says:

What adorable dogs! And great puppy recipes 🙂 I might just need to try these for my dog, or as doggy gifts around Christmas!

  4. Aww you guys had a doggy date. That is terribly cute. I had no idea Greg was the charmer. And I had no idea you guys had dogs… Nice. I have one dog that I love to pieces. I can’t keep her at my own place so he stays with family. And I love the name.. Coltrane.. classic

  5. Charles says:

Aah, wonderful stories Katherine – so fun to read! How I wish I could have a dog or two right now. I love my cat but they just aren’t the same as dogs are they? Great sounding doggy recipes – I bet they don’t last long 😀

  6. fatisrecipes says:

… okay I’m not this sort of person, but couldn’t these cookies be also eaten by humans? I mean what do they have in them that we can’t eat? Enlighten me, please.

Although I’m mortified (morbidly mortified) from all animals except for kittens with blunt claws, I still think those dogs are looking extra cute! 🙂
    Lovely post. Thanks for sharing.

    • Katherine says:

There’s nothing in there humans couldn’t eat. But there’s also no sugar so they smell better than they would taste to us. A lot of people are put off by dogs, especially ones as big as ours!

  7. Sissi says:

You have a big family 🙂 Your dogs are probably the happiest in the world! I wouldn’t refuse one of the cookies myself!

  8. Aah they´re gorgeous – bet they´d have a fine old party with our two. Especially if it was a “digging holes in the garden” party! Love the dogy treats, really should make some and stop buying them.

  9. ChgoJohn says:

What would our lives be like without dogs at our sides? I know that I don’t want to find out. Loved getting to know Coltrane and Mingus a bit and thanks for sharing the recipes. Because of you guys and Linda over at Savoring Every Bite, Max will soon have a selection of home-made treats to swallow without chewing.

  10. Fur children are the BEST! Yours clearly keep you on your toes – precious little things.
    Have a happy day.
    🙂 Mandy

  11. i love dogs. such a cute post

  12. Love this post, Katherine! Your dogs are too cute! Thanks for sharing!:)

    Have a great day!

What great characters your dogs are, I love it that you make them cookies. We have two cats and since there is just me and hubby the cats think the two spare chairs are theirs during mealtimes!

  14. SimpleP says:

The wonderful endearing moments that only dog lovers (and cat lovers too) can appreciate! Gotta love ’em! Thanks so much for the ping! Priceless photo, and the cookies look great too!

  15. rutheh says:

Enjoyed the stories and forwarded the recipes to a few people I know who will bake them for their loyal friends!

  16. What wonderful company! They certainly came home to the right house and pet owners.

  17. Wonderful post – and dogs! I see homemade cookies for Sweet Cleo and all of Hubby’s walking-trail friends!

  18. Lea Ann says:

Great post, love meeting the kids. I really should make dog treats one of these days. As much as I cook, I’ve never made something specifically for them.

  19. Lou says:

    They are both gorgeous dogs.
I do cook up some meat each week for Bob’s meals but I have never baked him any goodies. Although, we do spend an absolute fortune on treats for him. VERY spoiled.
Excellent photo of the two of them waiting very patiently for their treats. Beautiful.

    • Katherine says:

Well, while Greg took the picture Coltrane did put his nose on the plate and pull it down forcing me to lift it a bit higher. Mingus, the smaller one, was indeed patient.

  20. sallybr says:

Oh, I love this article! You know, we now have three dogs, two of them are rescues. None of them are supposed to come near the kitchen island while we are eating. They know that and kind of stay away. But Oscar, who is the biggest, always manages to sneak and lay flat, under my legs. How he does it without me noticing is hard to explain, But every single evening, he is there, not a single muscle moves, the eyes wide open, waiting. If a grain of rice falls, he is like a vacuum cleaner 😉

adorable creatures, your babies are gorgeous…

    • Katherine says:

Rescue dogs really are the best. Coltrane has made us partial to German shepherds, but our dogs will always have to come from the pound or a rescue. We love purebreds, don’t get me wrong, but too many dogs don’t make it out of shelters. I love your story about them staying away from the island.

  21. Cute. We are a cat household – or should I say Ritchey loves them and I tolerate them? He would swear differently!

    • Katherine says:

We had a cat very early on. I think I was in denial at the time, because I am so allergic to them now. That cat bossed Coltrane around except when it came to his food. Once it dared to get near his dish and he reared up and knocked it away with his paws. That was the only time Coltrane was ever aggressive toward him and the last time the cat got near his food.

  22. OMG, love that you named your dogs after jazz musicians!

    • Katherine says:

That was all Greg. I guess if we ever have a girl dog it’ll be Ella or Billie. After all the years of me and boys, I will one day have a girl dog. Fingers crossed. And I’ll push for something like Luna or Hermoine!

  23. Amy says:

Aw, your pooches are adorable! You should feature them in your posts more often…perhaps as taste testers. Though I doubt they’d ever give a bad review 🙂

  24. Your doggies are adorable. My daughters used to have a small business selling homemade dog treats several years ago. They packaged them in chinese food carry out boxes. Of course, I had to help make the treats and sell them. I have to admit I was happy when they went on to bigger and better ideas. lol.

  25. Judy says:

Coltrane reminds me of the dog on the YouTube video The Ultimate Dog Tease — It always makes me laugh. Cute pups, I’m sure they bring a lot of life to your home.

  26. nrhatch says:

Beautiful dogs . . . and lucky dogs! They landed on the right side of the rosemary bush with you guys as compadres. 😀

  27. spicegirlfla says:

My Biagio and Bella will love these!! These poor dogs get tortured so much with all the food smells in the kitchen it’s only right to bake special treats for them!! Thanks for the mention; this was really a cute post!!

  28. ceciliag says:

Oh no, I am a bad dog owner.. I have never made cookies for our dogs..Bad C.. I will get right on it..

  29. Caroline says:

My heart just melted…and you’re making me miss my pup back at my parent’s house! We have a Golden named Chloe. I meant to make her homemade dog treats or a cake for her birthday, but never got around to it. Woops. Now you’re making me look bad. 😉 Love your dogs’ names, too cute.

  30. You are the man! I have a dog, Ella, and she would love some of these….she read this and now wants me to make some for her….! Arf, Arf

  31. Laura says:

So cute! My dog is jealous!

  32. Coltrane and Mingus make me extremely jealous of you and Greg. My wife and I are dog lovers who are with a little buddy right now (life is too crazy at the moment). Can we borrow either Coltrane or Mingus for a day or two? 🙂

  33. ambrosiana says:

    Awwwwwww…This is sooooo cute!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. lisamichele says:

OMG, Rufus…too, too cute – I love doggy begging faces! I have cats now, but once we get a house, it’s doggy time again, IF the cats approve lol

  35. So cute!
I love the look on their faces and all the trouble they get into!
and they say having pets lowers your blood pressure! lol

    • katherine says:

Ha, at times I suppose, but having a puppy that needed housetraining when Greg’s parents were visiting, now that wasn’t good for my blood pressure.

  36. Aww!!! Amazing! I have a chihuahua! I am going to make these!!! I might give the liver brownies a miss though…lol.

  37. Kelly says:

Ahhhhh…………… your dogs literally brought tears to my eyes…. only a dog owner/lover could understand that irrational (or is that rational?) attachment. I almost forgot about the cookies and chicken recipe, which are also great. Loved reading this post as much as I enjoyed viewing it. Fantastic Katherine.

  38. Kristy says:

Oh! Look at those cute babies! Love them!

  39. rsmacaalay says:

I wanna be a dog 🙂 I can eat those treats!

I need to do this! My dog will love them!

  43. foodjaunts says:

Your dogs are adorable! I love that you featured some homemade dog treat recipes. Your post is bookmarked so I can make some for my own puppy.

  44. I am SO excited to see your pups! This is a great post as all of your posts are. Such cute pups. It does sound as if they have the upper hand with some of their antics. I was just talking with some friends about trying to find some treats to make for Miss Stella and Miss Sadie and look what I find on your blog. Thank you for sharing. : )

    • Mingus is actually quite obedient, but can be an opportunist. Coltrane, well can’t argue with that one. Now that he’s older he does the pretend not to hear trick. If he hadn’t done that since he was a young un, we might fall for it.

  45. Love the write up! I used to make food for my dogs daily and freeze it. It was a lot of work but it felt so rewarding! Maybe I will make some treats homemade for them sometime. 🙂

  46. Love their names!

  47. Love this! Perfect idea! I’m always looking for new little snacks for our Harley besides the typical old bone!

  48. niasunset says:

They are so lovely and what a great idea, you are amazing Katherina, Thank you, Blessing and Happiness, with my love, nia

  49. Hi Guys – you may have seen I´m having problems inserting links into posts. I realised this about an hour ago as today I cooked the peanut butter dog biscuits and wanted to link back to this post and thank you (and Mingus and Coltrane of course) on behalf of Luna and Alfi! Anyway, they LOVE them, I have two very happy hounds and once I´ve sorted out my technical problem I shall be able to post some photos and thank you properly. All the best, Tanya

  50. wonderful! thanks for sharing. I’ve been thinking about making some homemade treats for my pup, Sulrana, but it hasn’t happened yet due to lack of an oven. I’ll definitely keep these recipes in mind when I get around to it!

  51. Hey guys – I’m so far behind in catching your blog – you are too good at posting often! Love – your dogs and the stories that accompany. We too have dogs, 3 to be exact and 2 are rescue – well one rescued from the middle of a street on a 19* temp day in February, (covered in mange and fleas) a few years ago, and one dumped on our dead-end road! They love their biscuits and bones – as I suppose do all doggies!

  52. P.S. the third is a Border Collie who we bought on purpose!

Awesome my fur babies, Caesar and Winston will love these. Thank you!

  58. So cute! recipes sound great. I think my cat max would also enjoy these 🙂

  59. Sorry for coming so late to this discussion because I totally loved this post — the stories and the recipes. Grace will be in heaven when I make these and I definitely will give them a try. Your pups are gorgeous; I love the intensity if their eyes because you can tell that they KNOW these treats are going to belong to them at any second. Great to meet the rest of the family!
